I remember encountering my first request to write an essay in order to join an instance. I was flabbergasted and chose an instance without this madness and it appeared this instance was shadowbanned by major ones. Was close to giving up on Fediverse at this point.

If there won’t be a one “default” place for laypeople to go to, the project won’t catch on.

Bluesky got popular because they had this place. Pixelfed got somewhat popular because they maintained a “central” instance. Matrix had matrix.org.

PeerTube, Lemmy and most of the Fediverse are niche geek places because they have many equally poorly-funded instances.

If copyright status is the reason, they should ban any, even a single-line AI contributions.

And it seems a short-sighted decision. Now AI is slop, but what about in 10? 20 years? They would rewrite TOS again?

And what about people they want to migrate from GitHub?

Signal requires your phone number, which is not only quite bad for privacy, but also easy to block 2FA for your government if it decides it doesn’t like private chats.

Sad I lost access to GitHub account due to their dumb 2FA enforcement.

Most social media are commercial, privately owned, proprietary, centralised, and hence prone to enshittification. If a company will start to make anti-consumer moves to increase profit, most people will be too locked-in and invested to care to switch. Fediverse is a collection of independent instances in one decentralised network, constantly competing with each other with no full monopoly possible, and working under an open and forkable protocol.

I have a hammer hanging above the hard drive on a string, and every time I want to access it, I have to convince an AI it’s really me. If doubt level rises above 20%, the hammer drops.

Doesn’t having an app for reminding about certain dates defeat the purpose of congratulating people about them? Isn’t the whole thing in it showing that they are so important to you that you remember them? Why would your friends want to complicate your routine with date checking step, if the process can be automated, how that’s different from sending you both a message from a bot?
