Damn, that’s a long time without spoiling.
To be fair, that was my reaction too that one time I had to work with it

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•I'm upgrading from an old pc to a NAS with OMV. What about RAID?English
3·12 days agoTo add to this, I deal with massive storage clusters, and it is my firm professional opinion that hardware raid necessitates a proper raid controller with cache vault. If you have that, then you’re golden. If not, stick to software raid.

1·16 days agoHighly niche requirements not serviced by available hardware without costing waaaay too much. For example, we’re currently using Cisco Meraki MX85, and even they’re not quite there.

3·16 days agoRight now I’m using a Fortigate 101E, but eons back I used a simple PC built as cheaply as possible, installed Linux, ip_forward = 1, and iptables.
I am, however, tempted to build something semi-professional based on a banana pi, as I need something custom for work.

5·17 days agoAround 700W on low load, almost idle. Haven’t had the chance to test it at full load yet.
It sits in my basement, so the waste heat is actually useful this time of year. Even more so when my basement would otherwise be freezing.
I plan on implementing scheduling where the two most power hungry servers are powered down and up as needed. The other two take almost nothing.
Also, the UPS supports a green mode that is a lot more efficient but with a downside of output side dropping out a few ms during switchover. This removes any conversion loss. I haven’t tested whether my hardware can tolerate it yet, so for now I’m living with the conversion loss.
My house is powered by cheap hydroelectric supply, generated in a mountain roughly 5km from my house, so I’m not worried.

What I meant to write here was: I’ve used both linux and freebsd, and nature vs nature holds true, I th8nk. But I am unsure which one is which.

22·18 days agoA separate family of operating systems. It’s a direct decendant of the old UNIX. FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD are the most common distributions.
It shares a lot of the same userspace tools as Linux (the GNUserspace, if you will), so if you’re used to the command line, a lot will seem familiar at a first glance. However, the underlying mechanisms can feel a bit strange at first once you try it out.
I used FreeBSD as my daily driver back in the day, but now I’m also on Mint, mostly because I used linux more at work.
I’ve been meaning to check out BSD these days to see how far it’s come since I last used it 20ish years ago, I just haven’t gotten around to it.
I also remember hearing someone say that there are two things from Berkley that messes with your head: BSD and LSD.

Dåre is used in Norwegian too, but not by anyone under 70, I think. Only time I remember encountering that word was through ancient literature in school some time in the previous century
That was the closest english-ish translation I could come up with for what we actually call it in this Norwegian household: Pasta la Dusta.
And dust is also an old slang for dumbass. Full circle.
Sounds like something shoutcast can do.
Remember the time before apple acted as if they invented audio streaming and built a walled garden of podcasts? We had shoutcasts long before podcasts.
Leftover from yesterday. Normally I wouldn’t add it.

I do want to, but it’s gonna have to be longer than this.
Also, you don’t do that sort of stuff at home depot? I bet you’re the kind of person who never goes “whoomp there it is” in meetings… pathetic…
