People in groups of 12 were chosen by God. 12 tribes of Israel, 144,000 (12x12x1000) saved in the Rapture, 12 apostles, etc.

Just picking a small nit: Matthew is not considered the oldest gospel, Mark is. There may be fragments of Matthew that are the oldest, but it is generally agreed that the writer of Matthew was influenced by the already-written gospel of Mark. Luke was written around the same time as Matthew, or a few (5-10) years later.

Saint John, New Brunswick also used to have a terrible smell from the pulp mill. Last time I was there I didn’t notice it, so maybe they have cleaned it up.

It’s specific to chemicals used in the Kraft process for making wood pulp. Other Mills might use at different process, with their own issues (like SO₂ gas).

I just watched this movie last night. I thought it was trying to be Disney. Cute alien sidekick, happy ending. Not much tension, because it was obvious that they were going to survive and save the day. I kept hoping for a shocking loss, but it never came. Or when it came, it turned out not to be a loss after all.

There were some really good elements in the plot, the science waved its hands in just the right places to make it plausible, and the visuals were spectacular. Gosling did very well as the only person in the majority of the movie.

One thing bothered me: they were at Tau Ceti, 11.9 light years from earth, but the return trip was only going to take 4 years and change. How did that work?

No way to be sure? It is absolutely sure that they are harvesting every bit of data they can from you.

My wife was shocked when she googled herself and found information that could only have been obtained by reading all of her emails. I explained that Gmail and other mail services are not charities, and if you’re not paying for them with money, you are paying with something else.

I have taught in Quebec schools this year, the first full year that cell phones were banned. I have not seen a single student using a phone. I don’t know if it’s still true, but I believe that MySQL used to ignore anything after a semicolon in a single command. It’s obviously better to prevent SQL injections and used parameterized queries, though.
