  • Watch the TV movie from the late 90s “Pirates of Silicon Valley” which pretty much paints both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs as really shitty people. I mean just look at what Gates did with the Altair. Said he had an operating system, didn’t have an operating system, and what have you.

Then there’s the whole Xerox Park thing where neither Apple nor Microsoft would be where they’re at today without the engineers at Xerox who were pretty much forced to hand over their stuff because Xerox execs didn’t see value in a GUI and Mouse. Gates and Jobs both were more than happy to go in there and pillage what was developed in order to create Windows and The Macintosh/MacOS

  • I couldn’t keep up with it because it felt “separated” from the rest of Star Wars for probably the dumbest reason. the tech.

It’s a really stupid reason. the imperial magnet sneakers made me stop watching. I thought it was silly. But in hindsight when I think about it IF the prequels didn’t exist I could watch Andor. It’s just kinda jarring for me when you got all this shiny stuff in other series like The Clone Wars, Bad Batch, Mandalorian, etc and then go back to the look and feel of the original '77 none SE edition of Star Wars. It just took me out of it. It’s a real dumb nitpick and I should probably give Andor another shot.

  • In the public sector in a few fields Linux just isn’t an option at all, full stop, because of key pieces of software that are industry standards/straight up required for that field. CAD programs for example just makes linux a no go. Any fields that are dependant on Adobe products is another one.

I mean there are some work arounds. Winboat is promising. I’ve tried it with a few things but it’s still buggy here and there i.e. sometimes it insists on launching the full VM for whatever reason. Bottles is just…I don’t know it’s not there yet and can be frustrating. Honestly I’ve had more success running non-gaming windows applications through Steam than anything else.

Plus as others have said the public sector can be…very slow when switching to new things. Look at how long companies held on to XP and Vista to the point they had to be forced to upgrade while kicking and screaming. Hell I buddy of mine is an IT consultant, runs his own business, and he’s had new clients that were STILL on Vista and it took A LOT of convincing and work just to upgrade them to something slightly more modern.

  • Here’s what happened speaking as someone who worked for 3 adult companies that were all bought by manwin/pornhub.

They bought out too many companies that hosted user generated porn/“reality” porn and couldn’t/didn’t do anything with it.

Take Pink Visual/Twistys for example. a good 10 years or so ago they bought them (I was working there) Now the only thing Twistys had going for it was A. the actual Twisty brand which was like a B or C tier Playboy and B. it’s user generated sites (GayTube, SexTube, TrannyTube, etc) and arguably Gaytube was in the later stages of the companies life making the money. It was all user and affiliated submitted content that had to be manually moderated (that was me) in order to go up on the site. Yes I saw/reported a lot of underage content but overall the majority was consenting adults and there was A LOT of it. Side note you know the video of the guy that sticks the jar up his ass and it doesn’t go well? we got that first and I denied it buttttttttt I did send it along to some “other” sites. you’re welcome.

Every “user” site was moderated by at least 2 people. each one. When manwin bought us they didn’t bother with that and got their asses nailed for it. SO instead of using moderators to view all the content submitted they decided to just not allow any of it unless it was from a studio. the problem with that? they pretty much bought all the studios and promptly either relocated them or shut them down. This is what happened to another company I worked for, Digital Pink. They did “reality porn” like Wife Swap, College Orgy Party or whatever it was called, and a shit ton more I can’t remember. We also ran a massive and very successful affiliate program called Topbucks. Manwin buys the company and again doesn’t do anything with it. all that content goes bye bye. And because there’s no content the affiliates aren’t making money so all those smaller niche sites also go bye bye.

The lack of content as you’ve clearly seen is their own doing. A handful of content studios remain and all those creators that were submitting their own stuff to us have gone else where be it onlyfans or simply putting up their own crap somewhere. the ONE company that has been around longer than any of it and STILL hasn’t sold to Manwin/Pornhub and is all amateur created content is Southern-Charms but…yeah you’ll be hard pressed to find a “looker” on that site.

Manwin became a sort of monopoly for porn. They just didn’t do anything with the shit they bought and now after all these years they’re starting to hurt. They won’t be around much longer.

  • I remember in like the late 90s/early 00s my Dad and I tried to install Mandrake linux on the home PC. it went about as well as to be expected.

We used to watch The Screen Savers and Call For Help together so because of those shows and Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton always going on about Linux we decided we’d make the switch. We went to a Software ETC and bought, yes bought, a copy of Mandrake. My Dad figured he could get it running because he knew DOS (well, in hindsight, claimed to know) and figured it couldn’t be that hard. It came with a huge manual so sure lets go.

We didn’t duel boot it, just erase XP completely to install it. it didn’t go well. completely borked the family PC and we couldn’t get it installed. Thankfully my brother in law was an IT guy and had an extra copy of XP so he came over and reinstalled windows.

We probably could have got it working if we either had another PC or hell if smart phones existed to look online to see exactly what to do but even back then wikis weren’t a thing and I highly doubt there was a basic to follow tutorial on how to install it.

Linux has come A LONG way and is a hell of a lot more user friendly to install now. Arch or Gentoo are probably easier to install now than Mandrake was.

  • one of the main things is it’s just painfully easy to install and have set up. I’ve installed regular arch countless times but sometimes I just don’t want to be bothered with that so installing CachyOS just makes things easier/smoother.

Their repos are great, their kernel is great (to the point I’m even using it on NixOS) and it’s just an overall smooth experience.

Plus I like the options they give you for DE’s and WM’s on install which they provide just about all of them with their own tailored configs.
