2·7 months agoIf you like this film you should check out an Estonian movie called November. It has similar esoteric folk-horror vibes and aesthetic with a more distinct eastern euro flavour. Absolutely peak movie.
As others have stated, the world building does a lot of heavy lifting in that movie where the explicit chsracterisation is perhaps weaker. The movie is not really supposed to be a character study, it is, like many sci-fi stories, about a hypothetical future and the extrapolation and exploration of humanity in that new world. The characters are there to help move the plot along and expose us to the events and interactions that take place, rather than as deep and nuanced people.
The cinematography is really spectacular and, even just from a technical perspective, totally mindblowing. The long shots convey chaos and tension in a way not many films had done before (or since) and I found them to be wholly immersive. I used to watch this movie a lot in a formative time of my life and it is still one of my favourites but I can totally understand why it didn’t resonate with you if you didn’t like the premise and were left cold by the characterisation. I would guess it just isn’t your kind of movie, which is totally fine.

6·2 years agoThere has yet to be a game in the intervening 25 years that has scratched the same itch as freelancer for me. Perfect blend of story and sandbox.
1·2 years agoAbsolutely! Black Earth gets semi-regular rotation around these parts too.
Mainly black and old school death metal. Also some ambient and contemporary classical.
The thing for me wasn’t so much the game choice but the placement. It feels like they took a big bag of 100 of the best games and randomly picked them out one at a time. If you start to ask is Y really better than X on this list then it starts to make less and less sense.

I reckon Napster was the first instance of piracy entering pop culture and that was in the late 90s. Of course it existed long before that (think anti-piracy measures from PC games in the 80s), but I would point to that as the pivotal moment.
