Real talk though. My vegetarian wife struggled to find good vegetarian meals in Oahu that were Hawaiian themed. Not that they didn’t exist. Just that they were lacking compared to most major cities in America.

Wild! This was my exact thought as I was signing up for Mastadon. I spent like 15 minutes figuring out what Mastadon is, what server to join, what each server means. Then I did the thing like I did with Lemmy and created half a dozen accounts waiting to see which server gave me my “Account Created” email first.

WordPress core is pretty wild. But modern WordPress isn’t working purely in that. The latest WP uses PHP primarily as a backend, and modern JS as a frontend and passing data through filters->DB.

I won’t call it elegant. But it’s not the PHP experience from five years ago.

I see this all the time. People complain about WP but think the alternatives are better, when they’re just trading problems for others.

WP core is stable AF. I’ve shared in many prior comments how I spend so many more dev hours fixing other CMSes over WP.

And if you don’t even need a CMS, fuck it all and switch to static hosting and markdown.

It makes sense.

Supporting Tumblr backend with patches vs building on top of stable WP and improving it seems like a win win.

How so?

More than a decade in. I started with WordPress and PHP+jQuery. Then moved through the entire JS Framework suite of angular, react, Vue, svelte… I’m not as exhausted as the author. But I’m pretty tired. All the JS projects require frequent maintenance. Where the PHP project gathering dust on PHP 5.6, it only took me a few days to bring it up to PHP 8.2 and update all the libraries. It would be 10x as long were it a JA Framework.

I blame bootcamps who adopted React and only taught that. Watching devs hate on JS because they decided to do web development in React. Not to mention the many many convoluted patterns in React over the past 8 years makes it incredibly challenging to update projects.

My buddy pays $100 for a cell phone service, and gets a new $1000 phone every two years. When I told him he pays $4400 every two years, his jaw dropped.

He first talked about how important it was for him to have wireless while hiking. He hiked ONCE in the past year. And if it’s super important, he can rent a device during that trip.

It’s ridiculous. I buy used $300 phones and pay $10-20 a month.

Imo, the mindset of “X is cheap!” what leads people to end up overspending.

Having worked with marketers, they use the whole “price of a cup of coffee” to convince people to buy services that they don’t need all the time.

I don’t have or need Spotify. Same with a lot of steaming services. I own Netflix stock but I don’t even own a Netflix account. I could afford it but why?

If the replacement for X is Y, sure! Buy the alternative. But honestly I think people should reevaluate what they really need.

Google has a culture that rewards brand new ideas. Everyone at Google wants to be on the cutting edge of something new, and if your job was to maintain something, that was a demotion/missed opportunity.

Things die at Google so frequently because why should an engineer shoot themselves in the foot by provide support?

That reminds me, I got a very threatening email from my college in 2000s about downloading movies and that they traced the IP to my laptop, and I could be paying $10k in fines, have this on my permanent record and/or expelled.

I loled and pirated a lot more safer.

Still waiting for them to follow up with that 20 years later.

I won’t stop until we allow slutty costumes for all body types.
