  • I read an article once that suggested that rancidity is something you learn to pick up on and that the inclusion of certain preservatives such as hydrogenated oils in US foods means a lot of us have lost the ability to detect rancidity vs people in other countries that don’t use these preservatives and food has a shorter shelf life. It took me a very long time to recognize what rancidity smells like, but now that I do, I can smell it in a large variety of items. I’ve smelled it in dry cereal, corn chips, nuts, oils, etc. sometimes it’s stronger and more obvious and other times it’s faint. It can have a slightly different smell depending on what’s rancid, but that base smell always seems to be the same. Here’s my suggestion, and it may sound weird… Go to a Mexican grocer or local Mexican restaurant and get some tortilla chips that they fry in house. Put them in a paper bag and leave them somewhere and forget about them for a few months. When you open the bag again, you will get the strongest whiff of rancidity you’ve ever experienced. Hopefully you’ll know after that, what to lookout for. I don’t know what it is about fresh tortilla chips, but damn they get rancid in the worst way 🤮

  • Bold claim when you remember all of the horrific UI that car manufacturers utilized before everyone started using Apple and Google’s UI. Sometimes I have to borrow an old car from someone and you just can’t find anything. Really, I’m more in favor of bringing back physical buttons for all basic functions, but a good UI will not only make it quick and easy to say change to the next song or view trip details, but it will also prevent you from performing more complicated tasks while in motion. We’ll see what GM’s solution is, but I have little faith.

  • I’ll tell you what I want… Katamari Damaci online multi player. Imagine the final level where you roll up the world but with the mechanics of the multiplayer mode that was already in place. It’ll be like agar.io where you get bigger and you absorb other people as you get bigger or you get absorbed because you weren’t quick enough at growing. They could update the levels to be themed and add new items and Easter eggs for you to discover and pick up. I want this soooooo bad! I want to play with my friends and strangers. I want different play modes where you get the biggest in the time, pick up the most of a specific thing, capture the flag, use your katamari to play golf but it gets harder if you pick up weird shaped stuff that throws off your balance, Easter egg hunt, racing, team games where you absorb the enemy!!! I want it alllllll!!!

  • I also have an unfinished basement that I’m working on sealing. Generally the dust comes from the unsealed concrete. Assuming your unfinished basement actually has concrete walls and floor, you can do the same to prevent the dust in the first place. They sell concrete sealer at hardware stores and you can have them color it to your liking as well. Just need to wash the floor and walls first, then paint it with a couple coats depending on the brand of paint. Aside from that, if you don’t want to seal the basement, you’ll just want to create a walled off area using sheets or plastic or similar that will prevent dust from getting into the area and then using an air purifier like you mentioned. This is really only good as a temporary solution, but it could work fine for a quick fix while you figure out your basement situation.
