“In South America only one person stood for the World Motorsport Council. In Africa only two. All three are directly associated with the incumbent. The result is simple,” Mayer said less than two weeks ago. “No one but the incumbent can run under the FIA system.”

In response to Mayer’s comments, the FIA said: “The FIA presidential election is a structured and democratic process, to ensure fairness and integrity at every stage.”

I’m not surprised but still. That’s not even a response, it completely ignores Mayer’s statement.

The rule is ridiculous so I hope this challenge wins, but I expect nothing and am still assuming I’ll be disappointed.

I mean, in a way I sorta understand the logic of wanting candidates to at least have some level of support in all regions, but I’m not familiar enough with how the process works to know whether it is appropriate to ask why only one representative from South America stood on the Council.

That is one terribly stupid election system if I’ve ever seen one. Unless of course you’re already in control and want to ensure it stays this way, then it’s genius.
