movies@piefed.social•Following the Louvres robbery, what are your favorite heist movies?
4·17 days ago- Hudson Hawk - silly movie where the thieves use songs to sync up during heists
- Kelly’s Heroes - WW2 soldiers try and steal some Nazi gold
- Thomas Crown Affair - if you can look past it being about a rich guy stealing art out of boredom, it’s not bad
- Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Western, train heist, good dialog and characters

Map Enthusiasts@sopuli.xyz•Passenger trains in the United States vs Europe
17·21 days ago…the density is the flex here, not the size of the country. If you put the US rail on your map, you’d think Europeans hate trains.

That one? Or the one with a young Q? Or the one where Wesley gets himself the death penalty? Or when Wesley is into werewolves? Or when not-Tom Paris causes somebody to die by flying fancy? Are there episodes with children where they’re not a problem? Besides that one with the drug discs, I suppose.

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•similar to the word of mouth post, what game did you not expect much from but loved it?
4·22 days agoI played it with my partner but then we took a break and came back to it a while later. Forgot who we were helping and ended up with an ending we weren’t aiming for. Fun gameplay for a pair otherwise.

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•They say word-of-mouth marketing is the most effective form of marketing. What games did you (not) enjoy that came well-recommended by friends to you, and why did they recommend it to you?
13·24 days agoIf you’re yawning, there’s a great bookshelf in a library in the game that you can curl up and take a little nap in. Being a cat was great and made me want less of the rest of the gameplay. ฅ•ﻌ•ฅ

Gaming@beehaw.org•What is the most overrated game gamers hype up?
10·27 days agoI finally bought the Claire Obscure hype after seeing tons of group cosplays of it at DragonCon. I thought I had bought a turn based RPG, but it’s actually a rhythm game in disguise. I do not like the dodge or die mechanics.

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, a great looking game but with pacing issues
5·1 month agoI liked it being slower because I went in with the expectation of it being a much more chill game. Trying to accomplish everything or rush through it seems antithetical to the cozy vibe. I understand what you mean generally, though. Like I play “Tails of…” games and the ff7 remake mostly with auto combat and turn the difficulty down on a lot of others because that’s not what I’m drawn to and that’s fine.

Programming@programming.dev•How exactly does one get better at programming?
1·1 month agoJust keep coding. Feel free to use as many guardrails and tools as necessary in your IDE (linters, auto completes, mouse over definitions, etc) to make it easier. To use a language metaphor, you want to be focusing on how to communicate, not on things like who vs whom, the subjunctive case, or adjective order. If you need projects, there are plenty of lists out there, but doing something you actually care about and breaking it down into chunks small enough to do is probably more sustainable than a bunch of random tasks someone else recommends.
As for learning new languages: when you have to. If there’s something specific you want to do and it’s only done in a specific language, then go for it, but there’s nothing inherently good about knowing multiple languages, especially if spreading yourself thin prevents you from improving in your main language (or is detrimental because it muddles the patterns you’ve learned in each).

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•best episodes for people who've never seen star trek?English
1·2 months agoIt’s been a while, so may be slightly off with some of this but: There’s someone mocking another person in the very first scene of the first episode. Characters continue to mock each other throughout the rest of the episode. When that happened with Barclay on the Enterprise it was a big enough deal that they spent a whole episode dealing with it. Someone’s drunk on the job, another person is selling weapons (in a post scarcity society which doesn’t make sense even, and the excuse is that bureaucracy is too slow which sets up conflict), the captain has people tattling on each other. It’s like the characters are all assholes that hate management and management feels the same.
Hardcore!

I bounced off it several times until I watched an 8 hour video essay on it (not in one sitting, mind you). I finally completed the main quest on my next playthrough and really enjoyed it.
