That’s OpenAI admitting that o1’s “chain of thought” is faked after the fact. The “chain of thought” does not show any internal processes of the LLM — o1 just returns something that looks a bit like a logical chain of reasoning.
I think it’s fake “reasoning” but I don’t know if (all of) OpenAI thinks that. They probably think hiding this data prevents cot training data from being extracted. I just don’t know how deep the stupid runs.
I worry this is going to leave a crater in the software industry that will take a decade to fill.
For some reason when I read this I am reminded of our “highly efficient rail” which often derails
That’s why I vote 3rd party in presidential elections.
Huh, well California can’t count their homeless properly either. It’s a match made in hell.
Gavin was Pelosi’s pick to replace Biden, they’re both backed by the same regional California billionaires from SF to Sac. Harris is from Cali as well but her big backers are in LA.
My head canon is Biden chose Harris as a parting FU to Pelosi.
Unfortunately this trend is happening in the States even without the AI buzzwords (though it is there). You give every kid a tablet with educational apps that feed into a curriculum algo. Teachers are told by the algo which student needs help on what, basically they become facilitators to the app. Then you also have “student summarizers” which will “analyze” a student written or audio submission and flatten it down to some unform stats.
I don’t think having a diversity in viewpoints on whether kids have rights is something to celebrate.
If you name the garage door “pod bay door”, will it hallucinate responses based on Space Odyssey?
It’s all about individual freedom until you start asking libertarians about the rights of kids and contractual indentured servitude.
Appeals to fiction are a fallacy. Not let me explain why X group is bad based on an extremely contrived hypothetical.
They’re probably looking at Ukraine manufacturing cheaper weapons and getting FOMO. But instead of actually learning how Ukraine is innovating these guys are just " let’s do the same things but cheaper". Truly innovation that only an MBA can think of.
This is the one job the LLMs can have.
First of all. You could make facts a token value in an LLM if you had some pre-calculated truth value for your data set.
Why stop there? Just make consciousness a token value. See, AI is such an easy problem that me, a non-expert, is able to solve with just one sentence.
Over at “work on climate” there’s been an influx of companies that will greenwash using ChatGPT. One company I interviewed for (in my estimation it) boiled down to using ChatGPT to make generic greening recommendations for a business and attach hallucinated numbers that the client can then pass off for themselves.
Edit: is there a list of companies that use “prompt engineering” so that I can just avoid them?
Listening to this was good for my soul somehow
“We made some bad bets, anyways, here some layoffs”
Reminds me of when I did an experiment for high school science and could not think of anyways to improve the experiment because it gave me the results I desired.
