One suggestion is to look at getting any useful docker container up and running first to get a feel for it, then pivot towards heavier lifts. Self-hosting emails is going to be a headache as others have said, and monero nodes sounds like it could be a technical as well but that’s admittedly an uneducated guess.

I use it. I think it was a hardening recommendation from lynis IIRC.

I definitely experienced a lot more freezing on my laptop after installing it (it’s a memory hog) so I upped my swap and things are back to normal.

Was just thinking about whether there was an open-source alternative the other day, thanks for sharing.

My personal opinion is that it was:

• Easier signup
• A wider variety of opinions… Fediverse imo is known for tankies and progressives. I’m a progressive so I’m OK w/ the latter, but it can be an echo chamber at times.
• Built-in audiences (Threads especially but also Jack founding a spinoff helps)
• Similar to Linux, one of the benefits to open-source is plenty of forks and standards. This leads to a more fractured landscape at times and so it’s rockier than the alternatives

Regardless of how you feel about subscriptions, it’s a step in making the fediverse a more viable option for that that create content for a living.

It is Google’s attempt to limit what is possible within a chromium browser. It will potentially lead to the demise of numerous ad blocking extensions for example. It is one of the driving forces that encouraged me to move to Firefox to be honest.

It automatically redirects websites. So for example every time that I go to a site that has unscrupulous marketing and tracking, I can potentially use a privacy friendly front end alternative website. For example, every time I visit a Reddit link, it can redirect me to a teddit link, which is a front end alternative that strips out the marketing. These front end alternatives apply to a variety of websites such as YouTube, Urban dictionary, Wikipedia, etc.

Not in my experience. I am running a docker container and it is one of +10 containers running on my server which is basically a laptop from a few years ago. So far no issues.

I am self hosting my version so that is where my screenshot came from.

If I were looking for a public instance to use that has this functionality, I’d look to some of the European hosts as they are less likely to use Reddit as their de facto platform relative to Americans

I run Debian 12 and ran into similar issues trying to automount NFS, even down to having to use an alternative console to log in and undo f stab edits

My solution was simple and so hopefully it helps you as well. In fstab, the backslashes don’t cancel out spaces. Since my directory path had a space in it, that would break fstab:

Path/to/your/Video\ Files breaks fstab

Path/to/your/VideoFiles good

It sounds jarring until I remember Barclay’s Premier League being synonymous with English soccer for decades
