It also matters because that would be a truly amazing, world-changing thing if we could create intelligence out of thin air, some statistics, and a lot of data.
We do it routinely. It is called Education System.

The EU started their own instance when Musk bought Twitter
But they aren’t forcing Threads as a default. They are associating Instagram accounts to Threads accounts, the same way Google associates GMail accounts to GDrive.
We all hate Facebook, but can we hate them for the things that they actually do, instead of inventing false reasons to hate them?
Afaik, whenever an Activitypub instance has defederated from another it has always had to do with some combination of bad user behavior, poor moderation, and/or spam.
Nope. It is because the admins of the instance have decided to do so. It might be for the reasons you list, for completely different reasons, or for no reason at all.
Exactly, and that’s the reason why deleting a Threads account also deletes the Instagram account. Because there is only one account for both services.
I’m Your Huckleberry and so’s my wife
This “problem” isn’t new or unique to the Fediverse, or even to the Internet. It’s much much older. What’s to prevent someone from hijacking your name?
Most societies converged to a simple solution: surnames. The Fediverse is not different. “YourHuckleberry” is your username and “@lemmy.world” your usersurname. It is impossible to hijack your name+surname.
BlueSky will use their own protocol, so they will indeed be a closed bubble.
As for Meta, my (totally unjustified) hunch is that they’re expecting that other big names like Twitter, BlueSky, Google or Amazon will migrate or create their own ActivityPub services, and they want to be early adopters. If Threads is successful, I could see them migrating Facebook and Instagram too.
TIL that WhatsApp internally uses XMPP
Circular reasoning. “LLMs are different from human brains because they are different”.
Also, why did you felt compelled to add the adjective “human”? Don’t you consider that gorillas, dolphins, octopuses or dogs are intelligent, capable of learn new things?
And that is the problem of your argument. You seem to believe that intelligence is all-or-nothing, that anything that hasn’t a human-level intelligence is not intelligent at all. Of course human brains are more complicated that current LLMs, nobody has ever disputed that. But concluding that they aren’t and will never be intelligent because they aren’t as complicated is a huge non-sequitur.
