That version of the song gets stuck in my head for entirely too long entirely too often… Thanks for putting it back there ಠ_ಠ

Web Development@programming.dev•The decline of Google and rise of alternative searches as the source of traffic
5·1 month agoThis was really interesting. Thank you for sharing it here!
Just wanted to share this good bit in the comments here:
I hope that this is good news. The biggest strengths of the Internet are its decentralisation and egalitarianism, and the monopoly of Google search has been the total opposite of those. I am happy to see that other search engines are growing in popularity and I hope this trend will continue. Web search should be as it says on the tin, search providing links to websites, and replacing links with an AI generated summary with a high chance of malforming their content is just not the right way, dangerous for the openness and freedom of the web.

FreeAssembly@awful.systems•AAA-NO-SLOP.md: a signal for humans that don’t like LLMs
2·1 month agoProbably so that it shows up at the top of an alphabetized file list; for easy visibility. It reminded me of how some companies would name themselves to show up first in the phone book.
If the shape or look of it is important to you, you may want to mention that in your post with the other info (not everyone reads through all the comments before commenting themselves.) Maybe give an example of what you do like? That way it’s more likely that someone will help find what you’re looking for, and less likely that you’ll get a ton of suggestions for mice you’re not looking for :)

Technology@beehaw.org•Aggressive AI scrapers are making it kinda suck to run wikis
26·2 months agoThis is a great post about such a frustrating and sucky situation. Thank you for sharing it with us here. I really feel for all the smaller sites and webmasters who have to deal with all this absurdity. :(
Like they mentioned, when I hit one of those damn Cloudflare ‘prove you’re a human’ checks – which is a LOT nowadays – I definitely do get irritated…but I’m not usually upset with the site owner who is just trying to protect their site. I feel for them. I’m pissed off and disgusted at all the greedy, inconsiderate assholes and corporations who are fucking everything up for us normal people, both on the Internet and off.
I don’t know where we go from here, but I hope it somehow gets better soon… ugh.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure it is. I have this issue with any images uploaded directly to/hosted by lemmy.zip. I think it’s because your instance saves them as .avif files now, which I hadn’t even heard of until I started trying to figure out the issue, and I don’t think I’ve yet seen any other instances that do so. I have to open the images/posts in a full-on web browser to see them. I think some devices and apps just don’t know how to display them. It’s not your fault, you didn’t do anything wrong. Just technology being wonky :)

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•why is software engineering so horny
3·2 months agoHey, lots of people still do! I’ve seen talk of using it nowadays a few separate times lately, including earlier today of someone setting it up for the first time. It’s neat!
It looks great, I like it. Well done! :)

2·3 months agoYeah, I was thinking the same. Hopefully they’ll somehow make it to where you can only listen to the commentary with headphones, otherwise there will definitely be solipsistic assholes playing it out loud in the theaters and ruining things for others.
That’s just gorgeous! Thank you very much for sharing this video with us. It’s so relaxing to watch, too.

6·4 months agoLooks like the OP changed the link to an archived version. Just a heads up, in case you hadn’t seen it yet. :)
So then it won’t start at all, even though you’re only trying to drive on a black and white road and cyan wouldn’t be anywhere involved…ugh!

Programming@programming.dev•what open source tools do you use for music?
1·4 months agoIt’s been a while since I’ve had the money/equipment/etc, so this may be out of date information, but there at least used be Ubuntu Studio, too. But nowadays I see a lot of hate for Ubuntu/Canonical, so who knows. Just thought I’d mention it in case it’s helpful to anyone!
(Someone already mentioned Ardour… I think there was Reaper, too, but I could be mixing up my OSes lol. My brain is trash, my apologies)

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•What was the worst pirated movie you've ever seen?English
14·4 months agoWhen the first 50 Shades of Grey movie came out in theaters, my friends who went to see it were discussing how hilariously terrible it was. I love watching awful garbage like that for funsies, so I torrented it. It took forever because of my shitty connection.
When I was finally able to watch it, it just made no sense. But not at all like how a bad movie makes no sense. It felt like it was skipping around. I was so confused.
After some web searches, I realized that I think I somehow got my hands on some weird, badly-censored Chinese copy where they just cut out anything remotely saucy. Which was most of the movie, hence it not making any damn sense.
I still haven’t seen the actual movie, since I just never bothered to try again, but that experience was pretty entertaining.

6·4 months agoI think it’s a combination of multiple different groups each with many different reasons/ideologies/motivations behind this, so I think you and the OP article are both correct.

In addition to the trouble it gives dyslexic people, I also wonder how it affects people who rely on screen readers. I doubt those programs would know what to do with or how to pronounce a word with a thorn in it. I dunno, I imagine it’s super frustrating, especially if you don’t have enough vision to figure out what the hell is going on.
