  • Is that really true? I see free frames advertised all the time, but we all know how “free” those kinds of deals actually are. But if I think about it, the frame is just a piece of plastic/metal and can be mass produced. The lenses themselves need to be specifically ground and fitted for that exact person, often with a difference for each eye. From what I understand this is still partly manual work, even though the machine does the grinding, an operator needs to set it all up and check the result. With often a couple of passes needed to get it just right. And those special coatings they apply aren’t cheap either. So I wonder where the actual cost is.

  • Yeah it’s just a desktop wallpaper it seems. Big minus points for that. All the monitors also have the exact same wallpaper and the one on the side also cuts off.

The speakers don’t really fit and the monitor on the left is just bog standard and on a modern arm, as well as the camera (but I can understand the camera, that would be harder to mod into something).

I also don’t really like the way it’s done. Just random keycaps superglued all over it. Cheap diy ventcovers also superglued, not really straight. The little clock and mini-display are super cool though, but then the mini display is just another mirror of the main screen, that’s not great. The front is also kind of falling apart, which doesn’t look very nice. The stickers on the side are cool though.

So I don’t know what to think. The concept is great, but the execution really isn’t there. On the other hand, going this far for a daily driver is cool in it’s own right.

  • In trouble shooting it always important to answer at least these questions when asking for help:

    • What are you trying to achieve, eg what is the end result you are hoping for.
    • What is the expected behavior, or how do you think it should work?
    • What is the experience behavior, so what actually happens and how does that differ from what you expected.
    • What steps have you taken in trouble shooting. Are there things you’ve checked or ruled out? How so? What did you try?
    • Any background you think is relevant, so which software, hardware, versions, urls etc.

This will help other people help you quickly and efficiently. This will greatly improve your chance of other people being able to help you, or you being able to help yourself.

Just so you know, operating spinning drives this way is a bad idea. If the platters are spinning and the drive tips over, the rotation of the drives resists the movement. This gyroscopic force is enough for the platters to touch the heads which are flying a tiny distance above the platter. Obviously this is a bad thing and will damage the drives.

A quick fix is to just lay them flat or fix both of them together so they have a more stable base to stand on. Putting it in an enclosure is even better.
