There isn’t always a catch. Governance is often based on compromise and corruption runs rampant, so often there will be shitty things thrown in to appease corporate donors and conservative politicians, but sometimes the government just does something good without also doing something bad.

Unfortunately, the software for both running and displaying Lemmy is still in beta. While it’s still in active development, it’s probably for the best that we stay niche because bugs and stability issues turn off a lot of people permanently from the platform. That’s why I’m waiting until the Lemmy 1.0 release to really advertise, I don’t think we’re ready for that kind of growth yet.

I would be inclined to agree with you if they didn't get rid of Premium Light. I think charging users for avoiding ads is completely reasonable, we live in a Capitalist country and video hosting isn't cheap. Even still, axing Premium Light shows a desire to screw over users in order to achieve more profit, which in my mind makes YouTube scummy.

Yes. Making videos is a job and the creators need money to eat and remain housed, it's reasonable for them to want to be compensated for their work.

It truly is disgusting that they’ve made this model. Tinder has always been severely flawed in my opinion, but this makes it several times worse.

I’m taking a more free-spirited approach to my instance, communities can be formed as the users please here. The ideal would be lots of medium-sized instances each with a few large communities, but ultimately people will join where they want and we don’t have much control over it.

Nope, but I’m leaning toward the side of caution. If the super-conductor is real it will be shown as such within a few weeks and will be revolutionary, and if not I’ll be less disappointed if I’ve steeled myself to the possibility.

It’s a shame that it so far seems that this superconductor experiment was a bust, but even still, I’m happy to see the scientific process at work.

GrapheneOS sounds cool, I’ll take a look into it. Generally, I prefer the customizability and openness of FOSS and OSS solutions, but I’ll use proprietary solutions out of necessity or if they bring me significantly more convenience.

I think so. My Lemmy instance for example is currently storing several gigabytes of images in my cloud buckets, but with my 4 users I’m reasonably confident it didn’t all come from us.

Both. When you’re older you don’t have as much time to play video games so you want that time to be more meaningful and for the games you play to be more concise. In addition, a lot of games have added “hundreds” of hours of content by large and relatively empty open worlds that are full of worthless autogenerated side quests and collectible trinkets, which is undoubtedly a worse gameplay experience.
