I'm so intrigued by how often people complain about foss and Linux on lemmy. Everything about Lemmy appeals to people who are really into both and as someone else pointed out those leanings and the other main complaint, leftist politics, are all insanely tied together and all should be very much expected on Lemmy.
It sounds like the real complaint is that it's different.
Because yeah it's certainly not more toxic. That's laughable. My interactions here have been overwhelmingly better than on reddit.
And the other complaints boil down to "it's small and new, yuck"… Yeah that's a good thing usually. There have been terrible attacks with CSAM but people are handling it and luckily I've never seen a single image like that. On reddit it was not uncommon to see mutilated humans without wanting to even though there was far more time and resources available to prevent that
'computers were invented in America' is rather a stretch.
Which is why no one said that. I read most of the article and I'm still not sure what you were annoyed about. I didn't see anything US-centric, or even anglocentric really.
Where were computers invented in your mind? You could define computer multiple ways but some of the early things we called computers were indeed invented in the US, at MIT in at least one case.
I've yet to see anything but posts about this issue, so I'm confused by comments like this. I'm a daily user some days heavily and have been for a couple months.
That was my reaction too. People do but I'm not sure I understand. One thing, you could be much more easily on the hook for any copyright issue even if accidental. Also you're paying for a new service. I'd rather just occasionally do some local maintenance and pay the $2 a month extra to keep my machine running which I'd likely do anyhow.
Yeah and it was banned for being heavily used by awful criminals. Probably not a big deal to switch hosts even if you didn't self host for some reason
Yeah too bad that I was on a host heavily associated with CSAM /s
Yeah, this is all fair. I’ve just heard that online dating is bad so many times and so often that it’s become expected. I feel like it typically comes from people who either have never used it, or have only dated that way. Both groups have a less informed opinion than someone who went on a few mortifying “traditional” dates, and then started dating online.
I’m not trying to say I’m an expert but I do think people my age are in a unique position. We saw the world before and after the Internet, and since this change occurred in our youth we had enough awareness to process both versions of the world. If we put some laws into place that protected consumers on a basic level, I sure would drastically prefer the post Internet world. As it stands, some days I don’t feel like the Internet is such a great thing, but most days I do think it’s a better world, on balance.
How I saw this as a different version of the same old stuff is that this comment said essentially “well it used to be good when I used it, but now it’s awful and destructive” which it might be in ways but it’s absolutely a net positive from what I have seen
As someone who online dated for years, up until 2021, I’m very aware of the down sides.
Another version of “online dating is awful!”
Haven’t heard this one before. The world is better with online dating than it was without it
Most people don’t know the ins and outs of how these federated systems work, like you do
I don’t think you at all need to understand federation other than it means you can join from multiple places and that typically they mostly all talk so just pick a medium to popular one.
I still don’t really understand exactly how federation works and I don’t think it hinders me at all to not understand it.
This name will never not read to me as “bloo-skee”
48" is still small by many people’s standards. My TV isn’t particularly large and I think it’s a 52"
Actually I think a lot of people do upgrade their TVs somewhat often, as stupid as that is. I will be clinging to my dumb TV for dear life as long as possible, but I feel like people are very consumerist these days. TVs have gotten cheap enough that they feel able to.
It goes without saying that no one should have to buy a new TV because there is a bunch of trashy software on it, but I’m sure it’s already happened enough to incentivise these assholes’ bad behavior
We shouldn’t. Stop trying to fuck this up.
Fair enough. I loved it. Had never played a game like that. I was definitely under the impression that these were mostly PC games. I had a lot of fun with Morrowind and played oblivion a bit too. I didn’t see a ton of difference in them. Then Skyrim for me was absolutely incredible. Besides the bugs (which I barely ever saw myself) I didn’t see a single reason people talked so much smack about that game.
Morrowind is older than many in this thread. It was a great game but I really don’t understand why people think it was way better than its sequels.
Twitter has always been garbage but now it's way worse than ever before
