Yeah I think that people should be a lot more willing to pay someone to contribute to open source than they are to pay for usage of closed code. It really should be seen as the best form of charity, like when I donate to an open source project that makes a good education tool what I’m really doing is donating that tool to every school in the developing world and every student that wouldn’t have been able to afford a paid version.

I think that we need to get into a world where showing off which projects you support is a way of flexing, like all these super rich attention seekers need to start funding development teams for apps ‘oh yeah I was so annoyed the librivox app didn’t have ai search tools that I paid two PhD students to implement it, apparently it’s been a real boon for foreign language learners and literary academics but I just use it to find me historic novels similar in theme to events in my own life, you know it suggested shadow over innsmouth, I don’t know what it’s trying to say!’

They’re a really good open source contributor with a great track record, I know people don’t like saying good stuff about zuck related things but they’ve helped progress machine learning quite a bit. Pytourch is a great example iirc used in stable diffusion

I think you’re selling freedom short, yeah convenience and momentum are hard to beat but Lemmy is where the open source Devs are and the first adopters, I think we’re gonna go see a lot of interesting things emerge here which will draw a lot of users into trying it out - especially if all the other social media sites are closing their doors to people without accounts from viewing information.

What Lemmy needs is it’s own version of place, not the same thing but things that are fun and novel and community building. The basic stuff is still getting finalized but as things get established we’ll see plenty of tools made to help moderation, to enable new features and useful ways of interacting with information. Hopefully some fun games and toys too.

I’ve got a lot of work to do on my main project at the moment but I’ve also got a lot of ideas for Lemmy stuff I want to play with when I’ve got the time, I’m sure theres a lot of other people cooking up ideas and watching things develop and stabilize waiting for the right time.

And yes it’s sad that innocent people are always the victim of war, there’s a lot of possible solutions which Hamas and the Palestinians reject so what’s left? Israel just has to sit back and let them keep firing rockets and killing them because they built their tunnels under hospitals?

Incidentally the kids in the hospitals we heard so much about got taken to Israeli hospitals where they got world-class medical care, if Hamas hadn’t contested the hospital and agreed to safe transit of wounded then this could have happened sooner. It often feels like Hamas want Palestinian kids to die and the IDF want to keep them alive.

By the definition given in this thread Hamas is absolutely doing genocide, what do you think from the river to the sea means? They openly and proudly state their intention is genocide and their constant attacks kill, harm and distress people - literally textbook by the definition.

Israel however loudly say they only want to target Hamas the terrorist organisation and they support a two state solution - to call what they’re doing genocide you need to belive this isn’t true, which I accept is possibly a valid argument but does make it much more of a grey area.

And no the fact that Hamas isn’t able to kill as many Jews as they want due to logistics doesn’t absolve them from anything - especially when crazy people are saying that we shouldn’t support Israel and help them with things like ammunition, really feels like they do like genocide as long as it’s Jewish people dying.

Well half the things I’ve tried to sub to say ‘pending’ then never get added to my feeds so that needs to be fixed. I don’t think it’s a jerboa issue because I’ve had it on desktop too.

I don’t really know what’s happening there, am I waiting for permission to subscribe? Waiting for it to sync between local and remote instances? For my local client to communicate with the instance I’m on or the the community is on?

Either way there should be an intermediary step where is stored locally soi I can find it again

Also it can be really hard finding small communities from a different instance, a lot don’t show up or aren’t fully synced so some of the posts don’t show.

Hopefully this is going to be fixed but I think it’s limiting the growth of more niche communities.
