Probably true, although Ballmer didn’t screw it up and Nadella did screw it up for one simple reason. He’s a 1 Cloud Pony. He came from the cloud and that’s all he really knows, and his narrow Senior VP perspective helped him extract earnings from cloud but nothing else at Microsoft.
Some companies are in a race to the bottom on customer service, quality and customer satisfaction. They seem to assume the hogs will continue slurping up what’s at the trough. It’s allowed some to take marketshare that’s been off the table for upstarts for the last 20 years. Example: Independent game developers on Steam, some of which are lone developers without a team, now have a healthy business thanks to the big AAA game companies faltering. It’s not 100% about AI, but that’s part of the issue they have. Knowing when to rely on AI, possibly allowing a reduction in staff, versus when they’re over-relying on AI, seems elusive for them.

Nano’s used because it’s easier to use, which means the user interface is more intuitive than the others who insist you hit a key before making an edit.
