Not all indie games are low graphics requirements.

8GB VRAM is definitely a problem even at 1080p. There are already benchmarks showing this from various outlets. Not in every game of course, and it definitely hurts AAA mre than others. but it will get worse with time, and people buy GPUs to last several years, so it shouldn’t have a major issue on the day you buy it!
AngryMob@lemmy.oneto Space@mander.xyz•Elon Musk promises more risky launches after sixth Starship failure62·2 months agoThey did just successfully reuse a booster on the last test. One of the most powerful boosters ever launched was precisely caught on a tower and relaunched a few months later. But nope, no talent by those engineers.
Saturn 5 was obviously amazing, but we can’t use it as a benchmark today. We could do it again if we wanted, but we don’t want to. Standards and goals have changed. Both politically and in aerospace generally.
Is it disappointing that the ship keeps having issues? Yes. Does that make the program a waste? No. It will progress even if its slow. I’d rather it be late than not done ever, which was the status quo before SpaceX arrived. How many times must these goal posts be moved?
We are watching a whole new round of groundbreaking R&D unfold before our eyes and people are sitting here worrying about money. And a pretty small amount of money in the grand scheme of the country.
It is truly a shame that Elon is the evil asshole that started all this. It makes it so incredibly difficult to be a fan. But try to find the nuance. SpaceX has become so much more than him.

We've added an automatic tag on SteamDB based on the AI gen content disclosures on the store pages."English2·5 months agoFor your first part, i agree dev art has its charms. I don’t necessarily think that charm is lost if AI is introduced with a light touch to help them out. For sure if they just prompt and use slop then yeah, thats way worse. Curious, what if a dev hires an artist, and that artist uses AI tools in some form or another? Assuming they provide what the dev wants for the project at good quality, is there still an issue here?
I do agree with some of the copyright issues and computation issues in your second part. I don’t know what the solutions and future hold for this. I honestly just cede those points to the anti-ai crowd. It doesn’t stop me from being a supporter of these tools overall, but im mostly just interested from the technology side itself. And i really only use local models to tinker with them as a hobbiest, not posting anything.
Also side note, steam is already flooded with asset flips, functionally no different, haha.

Though i dont agree that ai is inherently equal to those human assholes. Especially since for most of the important use cases (ie not spamming ai slop all over galleries online), an artist is usually the one influencing the ai tools, not the other way around.

The musician or artist cant afford to hire a game dev for x amount of time to make a game at all, thats why they used the tool. But using the tool allowed them to get closer to their vision anyway, even if it is imperfect.

Fr. Sony/polyphony missing out on so many fans of GT that don’t buy consoles anymore.
And no microsoft, forza is not the same…
For me its lack of volume sliders
AngryMob@lemmy.oneto Gaming@beehaw.org•Game developers are still feeling the pull of last-generation consoles4·11 months agoRay tracing is not a fad though, and reducing it to just reflections is ignorant. Reflections, shadows, bounce lighting/global illumination, etc. all get noticeable bumps in quality. They are definitely more subtle than previous bumps from new techniques because those old techniques have gotten so damn good. But at the same time, those previous techniques have reached their limits and have unfixable problems. Whether that is occlusion artifacts in reflections, light leaking from global illumination, non-interactive baked lighting, shadows with uncanny resolution and no penumbra, hacky ambient occlusion, etc. etc… the problems are all minor, sure, but they are there, noticable, and devs want to keep pushing.
And this is ignoring the benefits on the dev side as well. No more annoying rasterized light placement. And pulling your hair out trying to hack the engine to get the look youre after. “It just works” is an unfortunate comment but holds a lot of truth. Even non realistic looking games will use more and more ray tracing as time goes on because of that. And eventually every device and card will have performance for a full suite of effects. Its an inevitability, not a fad.

AngryMob@lemmy.oneto Steam@lemmy.ml•Sony backs down regarding Helldivers PSN account linking on PC81·1 year ago35% of players don’t pirate every game… Thats absurd. If you’re referring to the pc gamer survey from like 10 years ago, there was way more nuance to it than that. Go read more than the headline please.
But even so, its not up to the consumers to bend over and be “pleasable”. Devs should treat the platform well, instead they shit out bad ports, they dont bother with basic options, they require more layers of launchers and stores, drm, kernal anti cheat, etc etc etc.
The pc market is huge, even excluding people who haven’t upgraded in 10 years. Its plenty attractive
Maybe im wrong and they need support. Maybe im not. I certainly am in no position to say one way or another with authority. But i’d rather be wrong about keeping them shamed than be wrong about letting them feel positive about their issue.
Either way, i respectfully am done discussing the topic for now. I will give your opinions some thought though.
Being a pedo may not be a choice, but acting on it definitely is. And any pedo who has to go searching for pedo friendly communities is not looking for help, theyre looking to get off.
Its not a big secret to them that they have something wrong to live with. They dont need a support community to tell them how not to fuck kids. It shouldnt take that much self control for them to not fuck kids…
I’d even bet the vast majority of them already do just fine living normal lives. Just like the vast majority of “normal” adults dont go around raping each other just because they feel sexually aroused by someone.
This should include a user count in each so we can see just how many pedos and nazis are being punted to their own little disgusting bubbles
Art style, fidelity, and realism are all somewhat separate. Yeah a good art style can make a game timeless. There are countless examples of that. But it doesnt mean that realistic looking games cant have a great art style. I think cohesion is a huge part of what people mean by “art style”. Realistic looking games that focus on having a cohesive look can also be fairly timeless. They may not compete with today’s fidelity (resolution, technology, etc), but Assassin’s Creed, various Battlefield games, Crysis 1, and plenty more all look great if you look at them today.
Theres also the concept of somwthing not realistic, but high fidelity. Minecraft RTX is simply amazing. Taking that already timeless art style and increasing the fidelity doesn’t suddenly remove the timeless factor, and i love that. I want more of that. Even if it means i need a fairly beefy gpu for such simple graphics otherwise.
The spin of it being positive for indie is absurd. Indie thrives on PC, not Xbox.
