Fediverse@lemmy.world•TIL about this Fediverse software databaseEnglish
2·2 months agoI hear about Python probably at least as much as I hear about Rust, to be fair. I looked at some Python code years ago and seem to remember the code looking more like a shell script than like other programming languages I had seen, so the ease and readability aspects make sense. If ever I do start programming, I won’t start by learning Rust. Baby steps.

3·2 months agoIs Rust really so obscure? I’m not a programmer, but I seem to hear about Rust frequently in any remotely halfway-techy space.

Those are all Lemmy and PieFed, and I’m not so familiar with Mastodon and others. Maybe look at mas.to ?

1·4 months agoLibrewolf is also an option, which is basically just FF with arkenfox preinstalled.
I don’t think that it’s just that. Librewolf probably makes many of the same changes, but from what I understand, it is a completely separate project, so not all of the arkenfox changes are included in Librewolf and vice versa.

3·6 months agoI don’t want to run Openwrt or Tomato precisely because they include non-free firmware blobs in order to support the ac/ax WiFi chipsets, and I don’t want to spend the time and effort figuring out how to remove those when the developers of libreCMC have already done that.

2·6 months agoI have a laptop that I use at the desk next to where I will put the router, and any network-attached storage will also be right there next to the router, so I have no need for WiFi. It’s fine if the WiFi could work of course, but I wouldn’t use it, and I imagine that many routers would be 100% compatible with libreCMC if not for the WiFi requiring non-free firmware. What I want to know is which routers these are that don’t require any non-free firmware for any of the hardware other than the WLAN.

collapse of the old society@slrpnk.net•Earth is trapping much more heat than climate models forecast – and the rate has doubled in 20 yearsEnglish
3·6 months agothe cooling is short term.
Yes. Exactly. The aerosols have a cooling effect that is fast-acting but short-lasting. Carbon dioxide has a warming effect that is slow-acting but long-lasting. In the long term, the warming effect prevails, but on an annual basis, the cooling effect dominates. We no longer have centuries to address climate change, so considering what the effect of any mitigation strategy will be in the short term is crucial.

collapse of the old society@slrpnk.net•Earth is trapping much more heat than climate models forecast – and the rate has doubled in 20 yearsEnglish
22·6 months agoExactly. No one wants to read that. It’s counter-intuitive, and it goes against the prevailing narrative. But the narrative that the media repeats is based on GWP100 accounting, even though we don’t have 100 years to address climate change. As Hansen and colleagues pointed out, people are not well-informed, and that’s true of the people deciding climate policy as well. Ignorance and denial of the facts will continue to make the situation ever more dire.

collapse of the old society@slrpnk.net•Fossil fuels 'undermine food security'English
1·6 months agoFood production now contributes nearly one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, with agriculture and land-use change driving much of the damage. Forests are cleared for cattle, and vast areas are transformed into chemically intensive, resource-heavy crop systems.
To be clear, there are many issues with the “food” industry, but when it comes to its role in climate change, fossil fuel use is not the biggest problem. If we include animal-based “food” production, then the climate impact is much greater than the “nearly one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions” quoted above.
You’re welcome! To make a bootable USB drive with
dd, the command would besudo dd if=/path/to/installer.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=1M && syncwhere thesdXis your actual USB drive.

Compatibility with Libreboot/Canoeboot seems to be one of the main advantages of certain Thinkpad models, so it might be something to check out. :)
(For creating a bootable USB drive from a
.isofile, can you not simply use theddcommand?)
I’ve not heard of that. Does Fedora have its own coreboot distro, or is it something else?
