.gitignore doesn’t prevent things from being committed. It just tells git to ignore files that aren’t already being tracked. And you can easily override that with -f. Putting .gitignore inside of .gitignore will ignore itself (if it’s not already tracked).

The real work of maintaining a distro is maintaining the package lists (and ensuring none of the packages are broken, buggy, etc). So if you have your own package lists, it’s a distro. If you don’t, “it’s a distro” is a much weaker claim IMO.

I find it depressingly hilarious that this is the line that makes people furious. Not the previous decades of exploitation and corruption.

So because everyone you know who uses “AI” treats it that way, that necessarily means literally everyone who uses “AI” must treat it that way? Wow, such flawless logic.

Some of us see LLMs for what they actually are - tools. Tools that can be useful, but are also dumb as fuck. Claude is fantastic for writing boring, boilerplate shit like unit tests and reasonably good at finding bugs in my code. But I am never going to take credit for its work. If for no other reason than “I wrote this” means “any mistakes in this are mine” and I am not going to take the blame for the dumb shit Claude does.

“AI” used to mean “artificial intelligence” as in “a thing that is intelligent”. Which disqualifies LLMs because they’re dumb as fuck; their ability to generalize is garbage.

This is why I use Gentoo. I get exactly what I ask for and nothing else. The core install comes with nothing but the bare minimum, and if you don’t want a thing you just don’t install it.

“This project contains blobs” and “this project can be linked to blobs” are not the same thing. The kernel source code is completely FOSS.

If LLMs (since AI is not a thing that actually exists) were banned tomorrow, I’d be pretty grumpy that I had to go back to using the garbage fire that is modern search engines. And I’d be grumpy that I had to go back to writing boilerplate code myself. And then I’d get over it and move on with my life.

😆😂🤣 Are you kidding? Have you tried using nouveau? It works, sure, but you can’t play games that are even vaguely modern and if something uses up a bit too much RAM the entire display system starts jittering/lagging or becomes unresponsive. Source: I ran nouveau with a GTX 2080 for years. I was only able to fully ditch Windows once I fully ditched Nvidia (by switching to an AMD GPU and scrubbing every last vestige of Nvidia’s bullshit off my PC).

Speak for yourself. I’m a huge Linux fan but I find it rather easy to not annoy people. Mostly because IDGAF what OS anyone who isn’t me is using. And the only time I’d ever recommend Linux is if someone technical was asking for advice. If they’re non-technical, I will tell them to not use Linux (no fucking way am I going to be their tech support). If they’re technical, they can decide on their own (unless they ask me directly).

Possible in the sense that biological brains and human brains aren’t special. But no one will ever convince me that large language models (I’m talking about the actual math and programming that they use today for “AI”) will ever be actually intelligent.

Virtually every company I’ve worked at used Office primarily. And by the looks of the other comments your experience seems to be atypical.

If I wasn’t already convinced (for separate reasons) to never, ever work there, you would have thoroughly convinced me. That sounds absolutely awful.
