First thing you need to realise is that’s it’s random encounters, not random combat.
It’s an opportunity for some role play, for establishing the setting, for dishing out adventure related info, etc.
If you’re only using the concept for more combat, then yes, I wouldn’t see the point either.

Dude if you actually know a gaming shop in Wuhan, I’m interested! I’m going for a few weeks in April and it would be just fantastic to go to a real gaming shop :) The one I found was mostly military modeling, with a mezzanine where people were, I guess, painting (I didn’t dare go up, my level of Chinese was abysmal at the time). And yeah, I noticed Cthulhu in your screenshots. I’m not totally surprised to see it, though. It’s been I the top 3 in France for the last thirty years. Fate is definitely a surprise, though! I guess it all depends on who the “evangelists” are. I’m so getting a copy in Chinese when I get there, hahaha!

Haha, I may have exaggerated a bit for effect ;) I was on Taobao and found myself some reliable suppliers of dice and minis, which made sense since China produces everything for the rest of the world. I found some board games imports. There were a good few card games, too. But i dont recall finding any RPG boss in Chinese. This is very cool! I ended up finding gaming partners through the grapevine, but even they had difficulty finding suppliers and confirmed my suspicion that the hobby is still tiny. Nobody has any idea when I asked about rpg, boardgames, etc. Apart from a few card games board games. I found one gaming shop in the whole of Wuhan and it turns out it was a mini shop (again, no surprise when the manufacturing is all made in China). Anyway, it was 8 years ago, so it’s no surprise things have changed. They do tend to do so very quickly, over there. Seeing translated versions is super encouraging! Thanks for taking the time, though.

I was in China for two years and not once ever found anything related to actual role playing games ever. Anywhere. And I really looked. There is a market there, waiting to be created, and I’m not surprised one bit that Tencent would be interested in that. But as other people have mentioned, monetizing that stuff is gonna be a challenge. I sure am looking forward to it, though. Especially once I get good enough at Chinese. I dream of the day I have a level strong enough to help translating games there…

Psionics is the reason there is FTL in the default setting, and also why it’s a post-apocalyptic setting. You don’t need psionics to travel, like in 40k, but I reckon removing psionics from the setting is taking away some of its flavor.
But from a gameplay point of view, I really don’t think it’s a problem. You could probably search the Reddit sub for Kevin’s word on it, but from what I recall, it’s a non issue, because it’s OSR and the game isn’t “calibrated” for a particular party, like say DnD3.5. You could always leave psionics in the background, something dreadful and not known to the public, like in Babylon 5 or Firefly. Even in SWN itself, like I said, psionics is the reason for the whole mess the universe is in, so they’re definitely not omnipresent, and more likely to be a trouble magnet, if present in the party.

If you like The Expanse because of the hard sci-fi and you don’t know about GURPS Transhuman Space, you absolutely need to check it out. It will blow your mind. Even if since then, the transhuman sci-fi movement has evolved, it’s still choke-full of inspiration, imho.
I dream of combining that setting with Stars Without Number…

RegexBuddy is an oldie software that gives you all the tools you'd ever need for working with regex. It has a wonderful tutorials section which I have found very interesting despite my years of experience in the subject! In practice I've been using Regex101 for years and with the introduction of an actual debugger it's feature complete, as far as I'm concerned. But I'd still recommend checking out RegexBuddy material. Very deep stuff.

Even if you aren’t interested in OSR style gameplay (which sounds like you ain’t), I’m still gonna recommend Cities Without Number because it’s sure to be a dearth of fantastic tools for generating campaigns in a cyberpunk environment.

I’m not familiar enough with the Forged in the Dark stable of games, but given that Blades in the Dark is about thieves and their schemes, I would be extremely surprised if there isn’t a cyberpunk version, which seems like it would be right down your alley!
