That is not the problem. Population declines as countries move to first world status, and I think the people not having kids due to financial constraints are few and far between. Otherwise population would not start and continue diminishing as an area becomes more affluent. People have less (or no) kids because they don’t want kids, don’t want a bunch of kids, and can reasonably expect the kids they have to survive to adulthood. And access to birth control, education, and other opportunities (mostly for women) makes having less kids (by their own desire) possible.

So bringing capable workers in means they pay into taxes that support the aging and school-age population, and never had to have their school-age years paid for. They’re a productive member with half the cost over their lifetime.

It’s a no-brainer… as long as you’re not worried about changing the… shade or hue… of your population over time.

Our replacement rate has been low for a long time, but our population has stayed relatively steady… because of immigration.

Low replacement rate is only bad if you’re racist/xenophobic. Otherwise there’s usually (in a supposedly first-world country) an easy solution.

And if you think this is a dig on specifically the US, it isn’t. Japan and South Korea are about to have insane difficulties with a very obvious and simple solution, and the US had that solution and are destroying it in favor of racism and xenophobia.

I was just thinking, if my kids did that I would tattoo at least part of it. That would be an amazing tattoo to have.

I still use PCMCIAs at my job. Had to order a reader. It has been… challenging (particularly getting permissions to connect it to the system, but even finding them is not super easy).

I’m at “iPad and enormous curved monitor connected to a laptop” so I guess I average out to upper-middle management. Which is shockingly accurate.

And to preempt an argument… “there’s no study that says beards/razor bumps interfere with gas masks”… There are. Most of them say minimal beards/hair is fine (less than 1/16th of an inch) to get a mask seal, where 1/8 can already lead to issues. But it’s understudied. The risk of getting it wrong is people’s lives.

I was coming in here to disagree with you, because I’ve heard this same thing, but I won’t argue a point unless I check my sources first, and sure enough, you’re correct (except maybe that stubble is fine). OSHA even states that tight-fitting respirators are not to be used by those with facial hair that extends past/across the seal. So one could argue that if wearing a gas mask is a requirement, anybody who has facial hair (other than a trimmed moustache) is unable to fulfill that requirement by OSHA rules alone.

Are we talking the crank-style can opener, or even the hook-type knife that some multi-tools have? Because the hook-type knife seems like a no-brainer that should have been figured out months after tin cans, not decades.

Cinnamon rolls (like the Pillsbury pre-made dough ones) in a Belgian waffle maker (the deep ones like they have at hotel lobbies).

Squish one per corner in there, cook it like normal (maybe pull it earlier, gotta trial and error the time), and pop them out.

The outside is crispy, the inside is soft, and the icing stays in the little pockets so you can eat them with your hands without making a mess.

Great for dating files, too. We have an otherwise exceptionally inefficient routing chain at work, but we’re required to start each file with the date it was created (e.g. 20250101 Johnson Commendation) and it works beautifully for finding files and knowing how long they’ve sat in someone’s “bucket” even though a hard copy is being delivered office-to-office (but final memo needs to be signed digitally). sigh
