If you run your own server (like a country would in this case) you’re the one deciding whether things are allowed to be posted. Of course that doesn’t stop other people from blocking you. But the whole idea is as a sovereign country a private corporation shouldn’t have a say over which posts are seen.

You absolutely want a keyboard when programming, but you can get one that works with the ipad. As someone else suggested the software environment is probably more the limiting factor.

You’re right, and other intellectual “design” jobs will have physical or visible manifestations of the design process. In video you have a storyboard, set design. In music you have notation, lyrics, demo recordings, and so on.

Imagine I send my friend a password for something. If I put the password in a text message, it will probably still be sitting in their text messages for the next several years. A copy of the password will be on their phone, their text provider’s servers, and maybe various middlemen servers, I don’t know. That information could be accessed by a hacker, rogue employee, or third person who is using the friends device (or a court!) not just when it’s sent, but years in the future.

If I send a link like this proton one, the link itself will have the same problems as a plaintext password would. The difference is that I, the user, retain control over whether that link leads to anything. I can turn off the link so even though some adversary has it, it’s useless to them.

What this does not protect against is if the intended recipient misuses the sensitive information, but that’s a different problem.

Yeah, I guess you could argue it needs more contributors, but sort of like Wikipedia, suppose it saw wide adoption. Is it just a learn to code type thing? I guess better that Wikimedia runs it than stack exchange or whoever.

Would love to hear an expert talk be about this more. It’s an interesting idea, but seems like it would be limited in usefulness to small adjustments.

To be clear, I’m not saying the basilisk is a real concern, and I’m not saying we’re anywhere close to being able to transfer consciousness. It could be a thousand years or a million years. But we don’t have any basis to say it’s impossible. It’s not saying anything new to announce we can’t do it currently. Obviously!

(Also the book “A City on Mars” by Kelly and Zach Weinersmith does a great job addressing why trying colonize Mars right now is a bad idea. Which isn’t to say it’s impossible or we won’t ever colonize it. Just that we need more research and capabilities before doing it)

Just because we don’t have the ability now doesn’t mean it’s not possible. Consciousness isn’t fully understood, but unless we want to introduce magical concepts like an immortal soul, our brains operate on cause and effect just like everything else.

Just like there’s no such thing as an unbiased person, there’s no unbiased instance. Better to know what you’re getting into than to assume what you’re reading isn’t coming from a particular point of view.

I’m a fan of jitsi. That said, like a lot of open source I think it lags in features and bug fixes. Joining from Linux I have a lot of issues with my webcam not being recognized or my audio being very low for other participants, while I don’t have those issues with the remedial Linux version of their app that Zoom put out.

I still use jitsi, I just don’t feel I can rely on it for mission critical applications, unlike say, VLC.

Torn. This is clearly a cool idea, and it would save a lot of work (which I would immediately offset with all the work putting it together) But then it will be that much easier to keep a traditional lawn going, which I’d love to get away from over the long term.
