Seems like a self correcting problem, honestly.

A game doesn’t necessarily need to be optimal to be fun, but optimal play should be fun - in my opinion. Optimal Dark Ages is just… boring. It felt like a movie version of Doom, which I guess people like. I certainly did not. I liked 2016 far more than TDA.

I think I mixed up my timeline, I was wrong about Ultrakill’s development cycle - I think I just assumed Ultrakill must have been inspired by Eternal because of just how similar their gameplay loops are (at least to me). So I guess you can apply what I said about Eternal to 2016, but I do think Eternal was the natural evolution of 2016. I guess Arsi is just a singular talent because he not only anticipated what Id would do with Eternal, he outdid them (I do think Ultrakill is better than Eternal). The style meter was chef’s kiss, every game needs a style meter (pls gib DMC 6 capcom).

DOOM 3 seems to have sizeable modding community because Id made it very easy to mod. I don’t think that the engine being easy to create things in changes the fact that DOOM 3 base is real bad. I think, if anything, it stands as a testament to the fans rather than Id or Bethesda. Much like other poor Bethesda titles, it was carried by the modders.

I can’t see the TDA to 2016 comparisons. I think TDA is such a departure from the DOOM series, similarly to DOOM 3. I think the only way it compares to 2016 is that both games are slower than Eternal, but that’s like… not a selling point when the game is slower than the older entry in the series, at least for me.

Not to mention, Dark Ages simply will not lead to the creation of something like Ultrakill. There will never be a TDA Ultrakill equivalent, and the creator of Ultrakill has specifically listed Eternal as a primary inspiration. That alone stands as a testament to how good Eternal is by comparison.

Like, I’m not saying you shouldn’t enjoy the game. But it really is the Doom curse — ID will always fuck up Doom 3. I’d say Doom 3 and TDA both are not Doom games. Both would have been better as standalone IPs and not entries into the Doom series.

Guys they got rid of weapon swapping. Actually, for speedrunners, it is optimal to simply skip all of the guns except the combat shotgun and just kill everything with your melee/shield.

This was the inevitable outcome after seeing, firsthand (I preordered, I am a huge fan of Eternal), just how fucking bad that game is.
