  • So that’s a pretty interesting question, because you’re asking for a modern RTS which doesn’t quite exist. It’s not that the RTS genre died, it’s just kind of evolved into two separate paths based on what people enjoyed from those games.

For those that liked the fast action, APM, control of units, MOBAs have mostly filled that role.

For those that liked planning out and building a huge base, there are a bunch of base/empire building games.

  • Recently, the Pocket Bard app for music and ambiance. You can select a setting like a town, dungeon, forest, etc. and it will pick thematically appropriate music. It has an intensity slider that will subtly change the music on the fly, becoming more soothing/playful at low levels and chaotic/dramatic at high levels. You can switch between exploration and battle music depending on what players are doing, there’s even victory music for after a battle.

It’s definitely a step up from shuffling between various YouTube playlists.

  • The depression and other emotional issues is what got me. It’s supposed to be Star Fleet, yet every character is like 12 flavors of drama that should be seen as unprofessional. I enjoy diversity, however Discovery constantly used it in a way where the characters are either struggling with their identity or have practically made it their entire personality, which is stupid because ST has made clear that in its future, no one gives a shit about that stuff because everyone is free to be who they are.

I mean, they even ran out of oppressed minorities and had to start making up their own like Saru’s struggle with being a prey species. Or the fucking ship having an identity crisis.
