  • You could just go to lemmy.world. That’s your home instance, it works kinda like an email provider. And if you (for example) use gmail you can access your mail at the Gmail website and the same is true for Lemmy.

But just like you could download an email client you can get yourself an Lemy client and use that*. That client will make API requests to your home instance to get the posts it presents to you. Your home instance in turn will communicate with other instances in order to show their posts to you.**

    clients/websites you could try

Here is one list and here is another. Also note that some clients are actually webapps.

    * you probably know this considering you use the Lemmy client sync

** Disclaimer: the last part about how Lemmy works is just how I think it works based on what I have read. I could be completely wrong.

  • Some organisation I think could run instances:

    • churches could run a Mastodon instance (maybe godwills.it, that domain is not in use)
    • some European science agency could run an instance. preferably this would be an Lemmy instance so that you could follow fields. That would probably demand some from of community nesting so that you could have things like an “math” community with the subcommunity “number theory” and a way of controlling who can post in the communities.
    • I feel like it would make sense for governments to run fediverse instances that could both be used as general purpose instances by the people of that country and a channel for news communication. Some governments could maybe take over the local instance for that country (I haven’t talked to the mods but I’m thinking of feddit.nu and feddit.dk)
    • the scouts should run some instance, either locally or globally. As a scout I would love that :)
    • libraries/book shops could run bookwyrm instances. This could also help them recommend books to customers based on data from there bookwyrm instance.

Regarding film instances I think it’s best if that’s community run as I can’t see any organisation who wouldn’t bamboozle it and wants to run it. And community run instances can work if you have more then one moderator
