The US police hasn’t really been a slave-catching service since the days of chattel slavery, but it’s possible you have bona fide slave-catchers in your area if you’re not in the US. Why haven’t you done anything about that?

It’s a wounder what reading the article can do for you.
It’s also a “wounder” what working a 72 hour workweek can do for you when anything over 42 is time-and-a-half.

Agree with the first, but I’m not an anarchist so I can’t agree with the latter two.
But it sounds like you’ve conceded the point that fatigue is a very real part of the job, so even if we never hear from moldy_rice I’m glad you acknowledged it.

Sorry if you were fantasizing that you’d get to shoot dogs if you joined, but that doesn’t seem to be what they’re looking for.

Yeah, it’s a shame you haven’t reformed them.

Torturing animals in childhood is a sign that someone is more likely to become be a […] cop.
Source?

Are you saying that’s a good thing, a bad thing, or just stating it?
Do law enforcement agencies in your area have similar restrictions?

Or my pet theory which is that indiscriminate hate from the public makes an agency worse, not better.
Why would you want to join an agency if you know the locals hate you?
Simple: If you don’t care what anyone thinks, or even enjoy the hate.
Obviously, that’s going to be a very bad egg.

Are we talking about the actual overtime or the abuses? If the former, my comment makes sense. If the latter, I guess they were just circle-jerking by saying “bad things are bad?”

I know you’re trying to circlejerk so forgive me for turning the lights on, but:
If you work 6PM-6AM+ and you have court at 8AM-12PM, then work starts again at 6PM, would you not be tired?
What about if your shift is 6PM-6AM+ and you have training from 7AM to 4PM, then back to your 6PM-6AM+ shift?
Both of those happened to me. No matter how much you dislike cops, they can’t be immune to fatigue to make you happier.

Frankly, the irony in how poorly your comment was written has me in stitches.
I’m pretty sure you’re accusing them of being dumb, hence the irony.

Paperwork is still work. If you’re over your time, you should be paid overtime.

Implying that if ZoteTheMighty became a cop, they’d just blast a bunch of dogs?

Wow. You’d think of all cities, Seattle would hold their cops accountable. I guess my understanding on Seattle was wrong.

Nah, it’s defense spending by far, especially when you factor in our payments to Israel.
Few people like to be the first(ish) one on the dance floor.
It’s slightly harder to sign up for than Reddit, so people interested in this kind of thing usually just sign up for Reddit (or stay there).
Most people don’t care about the advantages Lemmy affords us; they care about what’s on TV tonight or which celebrity is dating which celebrity.

However - should you ever consider dragging anyone else into court and getting a civil monetary judgement against them, you may also want to consider that an awful lot of the type of people who go around doing things that would make such a judgement relatively easy to obtain, also live their lives in such a way that collecting any actual money from such judgements is exceptionally difficult. Again, making court a waste of time and energy.
“Only poor people commit crime or injure others.”
Nope.
You’re missing a subtlety here… cops don’t take you to court, they send you (or your lawyer) to court. Rub a cop wrong and they give you a bogus citation which all they have to do is get a tsk tsk about not showing up to court for, but you either A) pay the citation, or B) pay a lawyer to show up to court to fight the citation for you, or C) spend your time and effort going to court yourself to fight it. Option B being more expensive than option A and option C being most expensive of all if you value your time in the least.
You start off by puffing out your chest in an attempt at pedantry and then just use synonyms in this context. Besides, literally none of that contradicts anything I’ve said and just largely ignores it.
Well, I’ve been around since the 60s, and interacted with a few cops over the years, and most of them have been pretty great people on the whole, the vast majority I’d say, on duty and off. Still, I have interacted with several who did get petty and vindictive and have been tweaked by signs of “anti-cop-paraphernalia” in one’s possession, and I suppose when you offset those against all the “good cops” I have interacted with, I get that feeling that “anti-cop-paraphernalia” really does piss them off. All the online videos of cops in the 2000-2020 era trying to beat up people filming them with cell phones doesn’t help either.
Neat anecdotes, but nobody should be convinced by anecdotes.
For the dozenth time, you are generalizing from a very small data set and acting like that makes you wiser; it doesn’t.
See if this makes sense to you:
“I crossed the street and stubbed my toe, therefore crossing the street results in stubbed toes, so I don’t leave my house any more.”
Trite meme that ends your otherwise solid comment aside, I suspect I personally would get involved if I knew or suspected criminal wrongdoing from a federal agent, but most cops (like most anyone else) would much rather have a paycheck at the end of the week than feel good about their moral compass.
But I was fired for refusing illegal orders years before ICE started blatantly breaking the law, so my “if I was in those shoes, I would totally do the dangerous but morally correct thing” is almost as worthless as if you said it.
Much like in Eichmann in Jerusalem, even those who actively and knowingly participate in evil deeds are more concerned with getting promoted than stopping to think about the morality of it all.
