A new website ( BigBoxDB.com ) offers a nostalgic journey back to the 1990s and early 2000s by allowing users to view and interact with 3D models of retro PC game boxes. This project, led by Adam 'Hans' Zwakenberg, a programmer at Digital Extremes, features over 250 classic games such as Dungeon Keeper, Diablo, and Age of Empires. Users can rotate the boxes in three dimensions and even open some to view the interiors, which sometimes include additional information and illustrations. Alas, they don’t have the nostalgia box I was looking for (any of the Petz series). Looking at the other boxes (especially the Netscape box) really took me back, though. Software boxes were so exciting and magical to see in the store back when you had a modem where download times were measured in minutes and hours for a few megabytes rather than seconds.
