Summary: A major brick-and-mortar store sold an Apple Gift Card that Apple seemingly took offence to, and locked out my entire Apple ID, effectively bricking my devices and my iCloud Account, Apple Developer ID, and everything associated with it, and I have no recourse. Can you help? Email paris AT paris.id.au (and read on for the details). ❤️
Here’s how Apple “Permanently” locked my Apple ID.
I am writing this as a desperate measure.
This why I use Linux and self-host everything. The only Apple device I use is a phone and only because I consider them slightly less risky and unethical than anything Google. As soon as a good linux phone is available that doesn’t rely on anything from Google, I’m done with Apple, too. The lack of any meaningful or productive protections against the abuses of these enormous companies is horrifying.
Careful: when you self-host everything then you equally have it all in one basket. Be very careful with that server of yours.
I do the same, to get away from the corporate risk, but I am acutely aware of the individual risk.
I try to keep redundant multisite backups. Not just of data but of entire server configurations. It’s a lot for one guy to handle in his spare time.
Everything is backed up to multiple homelabs of family and friends. Privately federated backups are the way to go.
yeah until your shit gets sucked up in someone else’s subpoena.
The backup I receive from my twin is encrypted. To me it’s just one big unreadable file.
you can’t unencrypt it.
the NSA on the other hand may have capabilities you’re not privileged too lol.
I mean, there are great custom Roms, like GrapheOS, LineageOS etc. They give you actual privacy and freedom from Google.
only if your using pixels though.
Lineage OS runs on a lot of devices from pretty much every major brand.
The moment Graphene is available for non-Google devices, I am onboard.
Yeah, I get that. But I just bought a used Pixel device, so I didn’t have to give any money to Google. If you are willing to go a little bit older, you can get them for relatively cheap. I bought my 7a for like 150€ and it’s still great hardware wise.
