    After 4 other Wickverse films and a show the 5th film didn’t excite people. You don’t say?

    I thought the motivation in ballerina wasn’t as sharp/ relatable as in the first JW. The other 3 were just him getting into a new situation, struggling through it only to set up a new situation. We get it, ‘you can’t get out, John’, but it just became repetitive and formulaic after the first film. Now I just watch them for the choreographed fight sequences and how he handles the hardware.

      I didn’t make it past the first “fight scene”, it was such shite, NGL.

      • No logic at all in the merc security, much less the assault forces;
      • Scooby-Do villain rationale in the girl’s “hiding” place (missing the painting w/ eyes cut out, though);
      • no-effort choreography just straight-up shellacked in post to try (and fail) to make up for the slathered-on WTF every few seconds;
      • grade school quality “bad guy”; etc.

      And, that’s less than 10 mins in! 🤦🏼‍♂️

      FWIW, the earlier flick by the same name isn’t much better, but it is an improvement across the entire board. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    If they had said Keanu was in it more, it would have done better. I didn’t even know he was in it until he showed up, even then I thought it was just a cameo until he joined the fun towards the end.

    I kind of think it wasn’t as well received because it has a female main character. Part of the appeal of John Wick is seeing a badass quiet guy wreck house against numerous deadly assassins and showing a female assassin doesn’t have that same fantasy of being the main character to their target audience that consists of men.

      I dunno about the quality of it but my friends who have seen it didn’t have much praise for it. I’d imagine there was some fatigue after like 5 movies in a decade. Your points could definitely have contributed but I don’t think they were the primary reasons.

      Meanwhile my wife loved it. I think there is room for this kind of movie aimed at women as well.

      I really liked it too I thought it was one of the better movies in the series.

        There definitely is room for movies aimed more towards women (including action movies) and in fact recently there was an article that the female share of movie attendance seems to be dropping. But I also think at this point this would need to be slowly and methodically build up again, and is not something you can just tap into. Similar to how franchises build up their audiences.

        I found it to be alright, but I am still somewhat sad that they leaned into the over the top action spectacle with the franchise, rather than keeping the more quiet and subdued world building aspects of the first John Wick. But I get why they did what they did for the mass appeal.
