Wait did they actually make a game that works? I thought this was just an endless void of bullshit that people kept buying into.

It’s actually already in this state far better than quite a few “finished” games I’ve played.

So, yea, it’s coming along nicely, even if slowly. Both games they are making I suppose as the singleplayer game is expected to release next year.

I mean if you’re actually asking seriously; there’s nothing else like it for lovers of the space sim + MMO genre.

Maybe it is top of the pack in the genre; but by how much?

For how absolutely out of any reasonable dimension their budget and development timeframe is, what have they to show for it, that you cannot get from X4 or Elite: Dangerous or any Starship Traders or any similar game? I cannot imagine it doing every single appeal of those games better.

Honest question, as I do not like the super deeply simulated games anyway. I like my space sims at least 30% arcade-y and easy to pick up.

So is black ops or genshin impact out of the dimension of any reasonable budget too cause they both had more funding. You’re obviously not asking honestly with a question like that. If you actually tried the game you would know none of those come close to the scope of star citizen. Maybe I’m wrong though and you are ‘honestly’ curious, I would say you could try for yourself and still not give a single penny to the big baddies over at CIG cause it’s free fly right now. That’s what I did a few years ago during another free fly event when I wanted to see for myself instead of just letting internet strangers form my opinion for me. I was blown away and I realized I could get a lot of enjoyment out of a $45 pledge ship. Played hundreds of hours since and had zero regrets. Absolutely breathtaking game. Why should it matter to me how many people have funded it? It cost me $45. Yes I’ve played a lot of x4 and elite and eve and freespace and even TIE fighter (1994) and descent not like that should matter.

Edit: now I understand why Lemmy is full of the same repeat opinions as reddit now y’all are just looking for the same filter bubbles you lived in before. Your downvotes say more about you than they say about me; keep it up.

Thanks for the reply. I do appreciate your candor.

I wish you would have actually said anything about the game. I know that you enjoyed it. 45$ worth, at least.

You are blown away and find it breathtaking, but I am not really sure why that is.

Asking people what they like about a piece of media is not “letting internet strangers form your opinion”.

I was asking because I am wondering where the game’s strengths lie and what it does exceptionally well. Because then I could compare that to what I value most in a space game. And could decide if I give the free fly a try or spend my time on any of the other infinity+1 amounts of things to indulge in. (Which is right now emulating Bloodborne and playing Clair Obscure)

Elite Dangerous, X4, EVE or any other high-depth simulators never totally clicked with me. But I have spent considerable hours in Star Sector or the Starpoint Gemini games. Games that make me feel like I am a space cowboy without throwing me infinite possibilities with no reason to pursue any of them. Which is often the feeling No Man’s Sky is giving me.

If I had to sum it up, I’d say I am more interested in Space RPGs than Space Simulators.

Maybe you could have shared what is actually sensational about the game. Which would probably have done more to counter any unfair criticism towards it, than just expounding on how unfounded preconceived opinions about it are. After all you love the game. So let some of that love shine through and carry the day.

I should have chucked the lines about budget and time, because they raised your hackles so much. You are probably used to the game being attacked on that avenue.

Dude no one here cares to hear about why it’s an awesome game; this is obviously just a place to be cool cause you’re ragging on the game, so carry on I don’t really care about downvotes. I shared my opinion on the off chance that you actually did want a fun game to play, because then you could find out for yourself why it’s amazing. You could easily just watch a YouTube video but since you’re so willing to write a diatribe with your time I’ll assume you do actually want to know why. It’s gorgeous, seamless transitions between being on the ground, walking into your friends ship and walking around in the ship, getting in the seat to pilot that ship, flying in atmosphere, flying out of atmosphere, etc. varied biomes and terrain on planet, flying in and out of cities / space stations / landing in a space station and walking around in a space station all seamless all feels real. You can look out of a space station window and see your buddy coming in for a landing outside, persistent day night cycles on all planets so you can see sunrises and sunsets as you fly around in atmosphere or even from an orbiting station, combat feels really good in ship or on the ground but yeah Im not a big fan of no man’s sky but if you aren’t the kind of person that can ‘make their own fun’ in a sandbox game you probably won’t like SC. This video is already a couple years old so there’s already a ton added since then but it does a good job of demonstrating what I’m talking about if you can find the time: https://youtu.be/53qGEaPRHCQ

I wonder if those people spending so much on an on-line game will feel they have got their money’s worth when one day the company shuts down and their digital purchases disappear forever.

Tbh, a lot of people don’t really care if they get their money’s worth. Look at the Call of Duty franchise. A new release every year that most of the playerbase moves to, effectively makes much of the purchased goods on the older game obsolete.

Anyone still giving them money, is stupid or ignorant.

For those who have been living under a rock, and are ignorant about the game: It’s a crowdfunded game that started pre-production in 2010. Released early-access 2017/2018. Their funding passed $500m in 2023(over $800m now). They sold virtual ships for hundreds of dollars a decade ago, some of which are still not available. The game is still not finished, they’re still selling ships and collecting funding, with no plan in sight to actually have a finished game any time soon.

at this point I have nothing but a feeling schadenfruede for Star citizen players.

Morons literally getting XP farmed by Chris Roberts.

I literally knew someone who spent like $30,000 USD on Star Citizen, Had almost all of the ships, and social engineered his way to a leadership position of an admittedly very small and inactive clan, he had all the ships, and only enough people in his clan to crew like 3 or 4 of them.

and because of his addiction, couldnt afford a place to live on his own so he had to share an apartment with like 5 roomates.

I spent $30 years and years ago. I’ve gotten hundreds of hours of enjoyment out of it. But you’re right that the more expensive the ship, the more people you need to crew it.

Let’s assume for a second the developer isn’t corrupt and is only spending the money on actual development. Is it even possible to spend that much money making a game from scratch?

At least Duke Nukem Forever eventually launched a complete game, and it didn’t cost $20,000.

Behold thine field in which I grow my reeps. Lay thine eyes upon it and see that it is sown.
