Worldbuilding@lemmy.world•Building a fictional religion for the technological era {general discussion]English
2·2 years agoI had the idea that Sikhism would be included in one of the “religions of God” which are widely accepted under religious toleration and believed to be a religion whose people who can go directly to Heaven.
Religions of God also have protected status under the Religious Child Protection Act. The Transformatsiya religion takes precedence over any other religions, but if the parents are atheist or pagan and they have a child who expresses interest in a religion of God, the parents are required to affirm their child’s religious beliefs.

Worldbuilding@lemmy.world•What is the position of the religions of your world on mysticism?English
2·2 years agoIt’s mainly intended to be accurate for describing the path toward salvation, especially the first salvation that happens after death. Tanisha mentions the day of judgement, but this is based on faith. There’s more stuff in the holy book of Transformatsiya that describes various “islands” in the Shadow Realm. Everyone has their own personal island that exists while they are alive. Sin causes it to become a form of Hell. Atheists get trapped on the beach of the island until they accept the existence of the spirit world. Richard Dawkins is still trapped on the beach because he has faith that he’s trapped inside a simulation.
Transformatsiya is largely based around the idea of achieving peace though following the path of God and that people should be servants and messengers of God.

Worldbuilding@lemmy.world•What is the position of the religions of your world on mysticism?English
2·2 years agoThat’s a good question. I haven’t fully worked out all the details of how the religion started, but Transformatsiya has its origins around 47,000 or 48,000. The latter might be more feasible since it gives around 700 years of development before the revolution.
I’m going to go though a bit of the lore to get to the part about how the religion works.
Tanisha Reznova is a spiritual being that was created in the Shadow Realm in 2004 from the collective consciousness of the Americans. She initially hated America because she experienced unimaginable suffering when she was created. The Shadow Realm is the name of the supernatural or spirit world. Even within the Shadow Realm, there’s no strong evidence that the God of Abraham exists, but Tanisha came to the conclusion that He does and worked to convert people to Christianity and Islam. She has never been sure which is correct. Tanisha is part of Reflection archetype of Americans, which is things that are hidden or repressed about oneself.
Around 48,000, a lot of people in the technocratic Union of Slavic Socialist Republics on a dyson shell begin to “hatch” themselves from the endless depression of the lifestyle given to them by the tsarist overlords. They have untouchable depression they later call “spiritual dysphoria” that goes away after they turn to religion. In the beginning it starts out as a spirituality. After Tanisha discovers them, she begins revealing stories to them through dreams and altered states of consciousness. Tanisha gives direction and form to their religion and reveals stories about Judaism, Christianity and Islam and also tells stories about ancient “Merika” as the early Transformniks.
Transformatsiya takes shape over time and eventually the general concepts of the religion are:
- There is one all powerful God who is, eternal, omnipresent, distinct and separate from creation, and all knowing. There is nothing else like him
- Worship of one god alone without equals or partners
- God has an intended path for people to live that will bring them happiness and fulfillment in this life and the next
- Those who are separated from God will experience unrelenting spiritual dysphoria in this life and the next
- Association with God, followed by social isolation or socially sabotaging behavior are the most severe sins
While living under the tsar, all religion was suppressed and there was no knowledge of any religions prior to the development of spirituality among the early radicals and later after the revelations by Tanisha. When the early Transformniks explore the galaxy and find evidence of Abrahamic religions, it affirms their belief.
Their attitude toward religion is they believe it because it “works” at curing their spiritual dysphoria and creating the foundation of a society. They believe that even if their religion is wrong, it still “works” and has benefit in believing it. Many people also have spiritual experiences where they truly believe it.
Part of the teachings of Tanisha include strongly cautioning them against wasting away gazing into the spirit world. It’s a similar idea to the concept of “terminally online.” People need to stay grounded to reality. She describes “terminally occult” mystics as “getting high huffing jinn farts.” Tanisha has to organize similar interventions as the time when Joe Rogan said that the DMT jesters had to sit down one of his friends and tell him to stop showing up all the time. (We live in a weird timeline.)
As part of their mystical beliefs, agnostic prayer is much more evil and severe and punishable under Zakon Law then prayer to idols because agnostic tend to pray to “any deity listening” which means they’re likely to pray to an evil demon or false god.
Spirituality and mysticism are encouraged as long as they help bring people to the “correct” realizations about God.
Psychology is also considered a spiritual field. Medicalization of psychology is often rejected by Transformniks as capitalist and they reject capitalism because many believers consider it inevitably lead to association with God. Consumerism takes greater importance then God.

Worldbuilding@lemmy.world•Describe an archetype in your worldEnglish
2·2 years agoIt’s both a psychological archetype and a mythological trope. Both fiction and one’s inner world can be analyzed using this archetype.
The USSR could be seen as a reflection of the collective American psyche. The Americans hated the USSR because of things they hated about themselves. (I am not defending the USSR, and I try to make that a point within the lore.) American complained about communists sending people to the gulag, yet they have millions of people in prison, often for crimes related to simply not being part of the conservative utopian vision.
A way of putting it could be that it’s easy to see the reflection of one’s own inner darkness in other people then to confront it in oneself.

Worldbuilding@lemmy.world•Worldbuilding on Lemmy.World is open - Now recruiting moderators!English
1·2 years agoI just saw this post show up and I noticed it’s eight months old. I’ll go ahead and submit an application.
###What is your Lemmy.World username?
###Do you have a Discord username?
r3d_f0x
###How long have you been active in Worldbuilding communities?
I started on the subreddit in 2018.
###What hours, in UTC, are you active?
12:00 - 5:00 AM, though it could be earlier or later and there are times I could be on around 12-2 PM to quickly check on things.
###Do you have any experience moderating, or any other experience you think is relevant to moderating?
I’ve been moderating a site my sister started years ago, though I’ve delegated most of the day to day stuff to other moderators. I run a Lemmy instance and I moderated a Mastodon instance that I used to run. I have to manage childish disputes at work, including with a former employee who had a serious case of main character syndrome.
I created a worldbuilding community on Lemmy before finding this one, and this is a list of rules I made for it. I’m aware that there are differences with this community and I wouldn’t have any trouble enforcing those differences here.
###Please review the first draft of rules. Do you feel you understand them? Are there any you feel you need explanation of?
I’ll enforce the rules however the leaders of this community want, regardless of whatever my personal opinion on certain things is.
With regard to rule 3 and 4, I’m aware this is not a memebuilding subreddit for explaining lore through memes. I would be open to users including memes related to the post within the content of a long post as a way of breaking up a massive wall of text since it would likely increase readership since long text posts will appear boring. I wouldn’t expect the memes to adhere to rule 4 since memes usually recycle content created by other people and it would probably be obvious that the user is borrowing from other works.
Again, I would not allow “memebuilding” where the primary method of storytelling is the memes.
With regard to the third point of rule 1, I think that some amount of real world messaging is acceptable, which I touched on in the rules that I mention above. Almost every story will have some sort of moral or message that the author wants to convey, and not including any time of real world message would probably make for an extremely boring story. That said, I absolutely agree that there should be some sort of limit. I don’t consider blatant soapboxing appropriate and the message shouldn’t break immersion from the story. I shouldn’t feel like the world was built entirely around trying to push an agenda, and wouldbuilding shouldn’t take a backseat to attempts to insert contemporary politics. I’ve seen a lot of second civil war worldbuilding on the subreddit, and I’m ok with that as long as it’s within the realm of fiction and doesn’t get into content that’s likely to cause political contention within the community. Personally, I try to avoid getting that close to real world politics, but I wouldn’t be that strict for everyone else.
As a personal example, I have a character who was created as the result of the turmoil of the current time, but I show the current time through the layer of mythology that’s fictional or at least ambiguously accurate within the context of the world itself so that way I can touch on some of the same ideas without getting bogged down by mentioning Trump or other contentious subjects.
I think it’s good to try to tackle pressing issues in stories, but it should be done appropriately.
Regardless of anything else, if a post were likely to incite a political debate I’d remove it.
Also with regard to rule 3, I care more about low effort more then low quality. If someone submits a badly drawn picture, but it looks like it’s just the user’s skill level, I wouldn’t remove it.
###Are there any of the rules that stand out to you? Any that you disagree with or would see changed? If so, how?
Aside from what I put previously, I’d change the AI rule. Using AI to modify a picture that OP has the rights to use should be acceptable. As for entirely AI generated content, it should be acceptable unless it copies directly. Cis human intelligence works in the exact same way and we don’t require cis people to cite every single work they have ever seen because it has influenced them.
###Do you feel you would be able to interact with the community outside of punishments, such as warnings or bans? Why or why not?
Yes. I tend to work with people and explain the reasons for decisions and try to help them work within the rules.
I would be more likely to simply delete a post and give an explanation without a formal warning because issuing a warning, especially to someone who might be well intentioned, could be taken as inflammatory.
###Do you feel you would be able to remain calm and polite while mediating disagreements between users, especially over sensitive topics such as politics, representation, or personal disagreements?
I think that I would be able to detach from sensitive issues.
###Describe, briefly, the tone and approach you feel a moderator should take when dealing with users.
They should try to work with users and offer suggestions for things they could do to work within the rules.
I mentioned above how I use in-context fictional mythology to describe the 21st century so that I’m able to touch on the main problems with our society without getting into the baggage and I don’t need to mention Trump or any other real world controversies.
It’s also important for moderators to remember that wouldbuilders who post inflammatory content might have good intentions and not realize how people would likely take something the wrong way.
###Is there anything else you’d like to add?

1·2 years agoI had an idea for a pandemic in my world where the religious communists are the ones advocating for masks because they argue that it will make mass quarantines unnecessary. The secular conservatives argue that it would cause PTSD.

1·2 years agoI want to have one of the “good” characters advocate on behalf of people who would be considered autistic, though they don’t use that label in-world. I also want to include it as a debate even within the fictional communist party where there is the majority of the party who take a seemingly cold attitude and a minority of compassionate people who argue for better treatment of the marginalized. The conservative faction takes a hyper individualistic and in some ways hedonistic approach that people can literally do whatever they want if it doesn’t harm anyone, which the religious communists react against. The communists believe that the community has a moral duty to help people who engage in behavior that is self destructive or that will ultimately make them miserable. Often people who are depressed focus on easy and pleasure filled activities that actually end up making them more depressed because they lack goals and purpose.
It’s also worth noting that calloused and evil people are in the minority, usually urban communist gopniks or rural prison guards. Most religious followers believe in treating marginalized people with love and compassion.

1·2 years agoI’m not sure whether or not I should make religion required in the world, but even if it’s technically required, atheism would still end up being tolerated in the conservative cities and progressives wouldn’t feel like trying to push prosecution there. Unironic blasphemy is illegal, but the progressives also believe in free speech enough that they would only take action in very extreme cases.
Believing in any religion other then overt Satanism is considered preferable to atheism, but there are also “religions of God” that are considered more preferable. This includes most Abrahamic religions as well as others if changed, for example, a monotheistic version of Hinduism.

1·2 years agoThe idea I had for prisons and mental hospitals is for the two to be merged on paper with criminality being considered a mental health issue as the result of a poor upbringing. People no longer age and felonies have an indefinite period of commitment.
People with such a religious belief would probably reject punishments such as solitary confinement. In very extreme cases it might be necessary to keep people physically isolated, but they’d probably get social workers and possibly even volunteers to try to communicate with the inmates.

Worldbuilding@lemmy.world•My world has an issue with people taking freely accessible resources for not their intended purpose and wasting them, what kind of policy changes might solve this?English
2·2 years agoIt depends on the internal politics and political philosophy of your world. The pseudoephedrine method would probably be effective, but it really puts a backseat to the idea of it being a fundamental right. If someone loses or can’t get an ID, they are locked out. Lib left and right of the real world would be uncomfortable with such a policy for this reason.
The communist party in my world learned from their final prophet Tanisha that the Bible and Muhammad both mentioned the mark of the beast and the biblical prohibition on any business transactions for those who did not receive the mark, and they interpret this as a warning from God about capitalist or feudalist overlords who will try to separate them from God in pursuit of their own worldly agendas. They would not go for something like this.
Another solution would be to control access to the supplement, such as behind a pharmacy counter where only a few people would be able to sell it. They would be able to deny sales to anyone buying large quantities. Limiting the stores that sell it would also make it harder to go to different stores to keep buying it. That’s a less intrusive method that I can think of.
Another method would be to detect the intium molecules or any molecules that it can react into.
