Do you have the webcam and other peripherals working? I looked into putting linux onto a surface a while ago, and at the time I came to understand that Microsoft runs a lot of that stuff through a propriety chip that is not well documented and therefore poorly supported on linux.

3DPrinting@lemmy.world•[Louis Rossman] Bambu labs threatened to send this developer to prison, so I'm hosting his code insteadEnglish
54·27 days agoIf the developer wants to fight this and Rossman wants to back them, then more power to them both. Obviously Bambu shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this. But it does seem unfortunate that the best case scenario would be the developer winning the right to continue doing unpaid work to make their aggressor’s products better. Perhaps an alternative would be for a more FOSS friendly printer company to offer a free replacement for the developer’s Bambu machine so that they can instead contribute to a platform where their work will actually be valued.

60·4 months agoThere’s a recent video from Hank Green outlining the very compelling argument for abandoning coal power in strictly economic terms. It turns out that even if you ignore the big picture environmental impacts like global warming and acid rain, and you also ignore the localized impacts like air pollution and chemical waste, and you ignore the other negative externalities like long term health effects on the workers, then coal is still hard to justify because natural gas plants are simply more profitable.
Not to say that we should be ignoring any of those things, but just to make a point about how impossible it is to make a good faith argument for coal in today’s world.

17·8 months agoCopy pasting my reply from the last time this came up:
Check how nearby colleges and universities dispose of used assets. The state school near me maintains a very nice website where they auction off everything from lab equipment to office furniture. It’s also where all their PCs go when they hit ~5 years old and come up in the IT department’s refresh cycle. The only problem in my case is that they tend to auction stuff in bulk. You can get a solid machine for $50 to $100, but only if you’re willing to pay $500 to $1000 for a pallet of 10.

3·2 years agoYa know what? Sure. This website has plenty of posts complaining about AI already. This is now a Casablanca appreciation thread.
I also think it’s a great movie which holds up spectacularly well. Despite my efforts, I struggle to appreciate many “classic” films (Vertigo is overrated, and I will die on that hill). However, Casablanca is just perfect. It’s a compelling concept, turned into a tight script, and performed by skilled actors. It really is an all-time classic, and I recommend it to everyone.

I think that the vast majority of philosophical hair-splitting comes down to the fact that we live in “a universe where all meaningful divisions are arbitrary.”
It lends a healthy perspective to a lot of arguments.

16·3 years agoI agree that Mariner’s role in the episode was nothing but a running gag, but I have to point out what an exceptionally well written running gag it was, both in terms of her character and her character development over the course of the series.
Mariner’s behavior in this episode tells us two things about her. First, she’s the type of person who can get stabbed three times in a single day and (mostly) shrug it off. This isn’t really a surprise. She’s has always been both tough and resourceful, but she’s also impulsive and emotional which too often results in her messing things up. Not this time though, and that’s the second thing the episode tells us. Mariner is maturing. In past seasons a knife in her shoulder would have resulted in either a fight or a great deal of grandstanding about what a badass she is for not caring that she got stabbed, but not this time. This time Mariner knows that she’s only here to support her friend.
Mariner is the running gag in this episode because now, perhaps for the first time, she can handle being the running gag. She knows that this adventure is about Tendi, and she’s not going to derail it over a little thing like getting stabbed three times.

Not sure if you referenced it on purpose, but Folding Ideas recently published a deep dive video essay on the Mr. Beast empire, and I believe that “Jimmy never stopped counting” was their conclusion as well.
It’s a great video. I’d recommend it if you haven’t seen it.
