Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL The Netherlands will be the 1st country to have a Fish Migration River!English
4·8 months agoFish ladders are common things on dams nowadays. The only speciality I see here it’s between sea and a lake.
“The file system” is also an abstraction, as files are not distributed that way on a disk. E.g. a file system could work without folders, everything just tagged, like emails in gmail. This directory structure was developed in the 60s/70s for regular users, and modeled after the actual way they stored paper documents in folders that time.
I’m not against replacing the system with something more modern, like you can display your photos on a map if they have geodata, and sort by date, you don’t need folder structure for that.
E.g. I havent used the aformentioned desktop shortcuts for ages, I just search for programs whatever OS I use, even though I was growing up with win9x
For the other rant in the post, if you use a COW filesystem “duplication” works differently, e.g. if you modify a file you actually duplicate it than modify the new instance of the file.
OOP is not mad because new folks are stupid. OOP is mad because the way they learned to use the computer years ago is not the most common way anymore, their knowledge will become less and less relevant. They want to teach the usage of a legacy system, but at one point no one will care about therir archaic and irrelevant ways of interfacing a computer system.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•ISPs seem designed to funnel people to capitalist cloud servicesEnglish
7·8 months agoYepp, Hanlon’s razor: they are mostly just lazy and maybe incompetent, not necessarily evil, that’s just a side effect. E.g. in my country if you call them that you want to get out of CGNAT they’ll just do that for you. My IP haven’t changed in years, but I don’t pay for fix IP. But it may be different in each country, I have mostly good experiences with local ISPs here.

Wiki says 222 podium races, that would be 55%. This wiki page lists a lot of records, but they didn’t calculate precentage for this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Formula_One_constructor_records
While Shelly wifi devices can use their cloud, it’s optional. By default cloud is disabled, you can even make them report to your own MQTT server.
There are different communities for answers like that, for general techsupport. Maybe OP asked it in a wrong place, but if it’s already here, and does not sound blatantly oftopic it should be answered in the spirit of the community.
And the answer was also wrong, OP asked how to save as inverted, not how to open inverted.
As we are in !opensource@lemmy.ml maybe OP would like to use a foss tool? You can’t be further from foss with aDoBe AcRoBaT rEaDeR

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Any dialer apps for Android that don't suck?
4·9 months agoWouldn’t it be better to replace the full rom at this point? You trust other parts but not the dialer?
What I’m trying to say, if you think your built in dialer is a spyware, it’s very likely other components of the rom could be spyware as well, and you don’t gain too much by replacing only this component.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Any dialer apps for Android that don't suck?
2·9 months agoWdym spyware? Isn’t the stock dialer comes from aosp and it’s open source? Or your rom doesn’t use that one?

7·9 months agoHow can you be sure someone is not storing CSAM on your server, if it’s encrypted?
It sounds like storj from a decade ago, but you got at least some monopoly money for your storage there. I don’t follow what they are doing nowadays but it started similarly

5·9 months agoHave you checked nocode platforms/databases? It’s basically a cross section of a super powerful excel and a database manager. You can set up the way you want, link records from different tables, add images, files to “rows”, like excel on steroids. You don’t have to understand SQL at all, that’s why it’s called “no code”.
I use nocodb. Tried baserow before, but I didn’t like that a lot of basic features are not available in the foss version, in nocodb only some bells and whistles are behind a paywall and not available in the self hosted version
They are also called airtable clones, as airtable was the first well known platform like these.
Some other similars exist: https://alternativeto.net/software/airtable/?platform=self-hosted&feature=database-management

Formula 1@lemmy.world•[OT] McLaren to quit the all-electric Formula E series - BBC Sport
5·9 months agoThey announced joining Formula E in 2020, and the future of the hypercar category was not fully clear at that time, LMDh was announced also in 2020, I guess their Formula E deal was already settled before. In the late 2010s WEC didn’t look very interesting. Porsche left it in 2017, the only factory team was Toyota in LMP1
