Please, people, don’t discuss the new polygraph as if it were more real than the old one. They are both tools, but, also, they are first both lies. It’s just a guess, but I believe there’s probably someone at every stage of the implementation saying it doesn’t quite work like that or that it doesn’t work at all. But who cares? The product they are selling is justifiable exploitation.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•How common was video game piracy in the 90s?English
1·1 month agoIf it wasn’t free, it was pirated. I remember asking a teacher for a copy of clipper to practice at home and he reacting strangely and saying we would have to ask the director. I don’t remember the details, but I got my copy and learned piracy was okay.

Technology@beehaw.org•Report: Meta will train AI agents by tracking employees' mouse, keyboard use
5·2 months agoThere’ll be people that see this as a good thing and not exploitative at all. We are absolutely too used to the people above taking two kidneys and forcing us to pay for the life support they provide that them asking kindly for just one kidney feels OK.

Some people still insist you have options and that the market change because of organic choice. You don’t and it doesn’t. Companies are subtle and gently guide you to where they want when it works. When it doesn’t, they push you while thanking you for your support.
To offer some perspective. The Linux kernel will now stop supporting a CPU from 1989.

4·4 months agoThe secret is going beyond making logical sense to regular people. How does an executive can make it look like their job matters? By offering solutions to problems that don’t exist. They can just pay someone to manipulate numbers and have accomplishments on their résumé.

3·4 months agoIf not here, I don’t know where. If you don’t understand the technology is being overhyped, it’s just a silly joke that doesn’t reflect reality.

2·5 months agoI’m sorry to jump in out of nowhere, but this argument can be used against your top comment in this thread. Some people listen to single tracks, others to whole albums. Am I missing something? I thought you two were just comparing points of view, not trying to decide who was right.

iiiiiiitttttttttttt@programming.dev•have some connectivity issues? just open every UDP port.
31·6 months agoLower ports are reserved, so they don’t want to create more issues when users apply the lazy solution. If problems start days later, people will remember they followed some weird instructions, buy they will forget weeks later.
You didn’t ask the same thing.

2·1 year agoI’m very sorry for you. People might not realize how traumatizing having to deal with it can be. It definitely shouldn’t be the responsibility of people without proper support or training.

12·1 year agoI’m pretty sure this is one freedom US people won’t let technology take away in the name of safety and ease of use. The roads and the culture are the problem. You can go fast and people will say going as fast as you can the whole time is the right way to drive.

3·1 year agoPeople should check the history of Marcos Pontes, the Brazilian astronaut, before parroting the narrative that only the most qualified and deserving get the job. It ended up being a case of you can do it if you have the money (or your government decides to pay to escape further embarrassment).

Hey, as long as the competition is reasonable, you can be as unreasonable as you want and say the customer has options. Curious they never say their customers appreciate what they do as a defense.

Gaming@beehaw.org•Games can no longer use virtual currencies to disguise the price of in-game purchases in the European Union
2·1 year agoConsidering you can’t sell platinum for money, you could add complexity by converting it to another currency when exchanging hands. No value lost, exact same ratio. You buy platinum, you spend it on the store or it decays when you give it to another player. Platinum carries real world value, decayed doesn’t. Would that work? The only reason for doing that would be to obfuscate the fact platinum has real world value. The players being constantly aware of the fact might mess with the economy.
Honestly, their monetization is really something I could never criticize.

Technology@beehaw.org•Meta is trying to ‘offload’ kids safety onto app stores with new bills, Google says
6·1 year agoMy cynical take is that Facebook wants the money from ads target at children, but not the responsibility of vetting the apps they might download because the trust the platform they are in. Google and Apple just want to pass the responsibility to developers and create laws that punish them for misusing tools they want to provide so other people deal with the complaints.
Still being cynical. It’s not that big corporations can’t do anything. They just can’t do anything without using their own money.

I always thought of steam as neutral evil for being a corporation, but that was just plain wrong of me. Compare them to Digital Extreme and the fact they accidentally created a lucrative loot box and prompt remove from the game. They actually called the mechanic a slot machine instead of surprise mechanic.
